Haas confirm Esteban Ocon’s replacement as Rafael Câmara gets shock F1 debut

Haas have finally confirmed a major change to their driver line-up for the remaining four races of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with Esteban Ocon set to remain out of the cockpit and Brazilian youngster Rafael Câmara handed an unexpected opportunity to make his Grand Prix debut.

The announcement follows a turbulent Mexican Grand Prix weekend, where Haas unexpectedly replaced Ocon with reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa. The Japanese driver made an immediate impression, scoring a World Championship point on his debut for the American outfit.

However, Hirakawa’s appearance was only temporary. Haas have now confirmed that Câmara will take over for the remainder of the campaign, beginning at his home race in Brazil.

Haas make final decision on Ocon’s future

Ocon’s absence from the Mexican Grand Prix immediately raised questions about his position within the team and whether he would return before the end of the season.

Haas have now provided their answer. The Frenchman will not return to the race seat during the remaining four rounds, bringing an abrupt end to his 2026 campaign.

The decision represents a significant development for Ocon, who arrived at Haas with considerable Formula 1 experience and expectations of helping the team make further progress.

Instead, the team have opted to explore alternative options, first giving Hirakawa an opportunity in Mexico before settling on Câmara for the final races.

The circumstances surrounding Ocon’s departure also add another chapter to an increasingly difficult period for the experienced driver.

Rafael Câmara handed unexpected Formula 1 opportunity

Câmara’s promotion represents a major opportunity for the Brazilian, who will make his Formula 1 debut in front of his home supporters.

The timing is particularly significant, with the Brazilian Grand Prix providing an opportunity for the youngster to introduce himself to the sport’s biggest audience.

Replacing an established Grand Prix winner is no straightforward task, particularly when joining a team in the middle of a championship campaign.

Nevertheless, Haas have decided that Câmara is the driver they want in the cockpit for the remainder of 2026.

The move also gives the team an opportunity to evaluate another young driver under genuine Grand Prix conditions rather than relying exclusively on simulator work and reserve-driver duties.

Hirakawa’s Mexico appearance proves short-lived

Hirakawa’s unexpected opportunity in Mexico initially suggested that the Japanese driver could remain in contention for a longer-term race seat.

His ability to score a point immediately was an encouraging start, particularly given the circumstances of his late call-up.

However, Haas have chosen a different direction for the remaining races, with Câmara now receiving the opportunity to demonstrate his potential.

For Hirakawa, the Mexican appearance nevertheless provides valuable Formula 1 experience and an opportunity to strengthen his credentials for future opportunities.

For Haas, the decision means that the final four races will feature a different driver alongside the team’s established line-up.

What happens next for Haas and Ocon?

The immediate focus will be on how Câmara adapts to Formula 1, with his debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix carrying additional attention because of the home crowd.

Haas will be hoping that the youngster can settle quickly and deliver consistent performances during the closing stages of the season.

For Ocon, meanwhile, the announcement leaves significant questions about his next move and whether he can secure another opportunity on the Formula 1 grid.

What is clear is that Haas have made their decision. After turning to Hirakawa in Mexico, the team have now entrusted their remaining 2026 campaign to Câmara.

The Brazilian’s debut could prove to be one of the most closely watched storylines of the final races.

  1. Totally foreseeable & I (like others) correctly assumed already on Saturday that the partnership’s end was simply brought forward & I also correctly assumed that Camara’s full-time debut would be brought forward.

Surely Camara also competes in the Las Vegas GP, at the very least, & even if the Middle East rounds could go ahead as scheduled, the F2 championship situation makes foregoing the remaining scheduled F2 rounds unideal, as he’d effectively hand the championship to Tsolov on a plate, so Hirakawa returning to competitive driving duties for the last two rounds would be more likely.

In the Imola stand-in scenario, the team should just keep Camara until the season’s end, unless F2 also competed in Imola, which seems somewhat unlikely.

In any case, this separate driver change for the next round, at the very least, means Haas reaches the seasonal maximum of four drivers.

This means that since they don’t intend to run Ocon again, Camara & Hirakawa are the only options alongside Ollie for the remaining season in either scenario, & in case Ollie couldn’t compete in any of the remaining rounds, they’d run both simultaneously for the competitive sessions.

Btw, Komatsu’s claim that what happened will remain an internal matter isn’t necessarily the case forever, as nothing prevents Ocon from disclosing what fully happened in Mexico in an autobiography someday in the more distant future.

Consequently, another driver will substitute for Ollie in FP1 since the garage side used by Camara has its minimum fulfilled, while Ollie’s side has one FP1 left.
