Once again, discussions surrounding the future of Max Verstappen are dominating the Formula 1 paddock. Fresh speculation suggests that the reigning world champion could be involved in a sensational reshuffle of the driver market, alongside Oscar Piastri and McLaren.
Reports this week claim that conversations regarding Verstappen’s long-term options are already taking place, while Red Bull are also being linked with Piastri as a possible successor should Verstappen eventually leave the Milton Keynes-based squad.

Joe Saward has reignited speculation about Verstappen’s exit
Veteran Formula 1 journalist Joe Saward has added further momentum to the rumours by reporting that Verstappen has already held talks with McLaren regarding a potential future move.
This comes at a time of uncertainty over Verstappen’s future at Red Bull Racing, despite him being under contract until the end of 2028. Further, Verstappen’s long term race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is headed to McLaren in a senior position within the Woking based team, adding further incentive for the Dutchman to move.
Although Red Bull showed signs of progress during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, the team is still widely viewed as trailing both McLaren and Mercedes in terms of outright pace at the start of the 2026 season.
This has inevitably fuelled further discussion about Verstappen’s long-term future, particularly as the new regulation cycle continues to reshape the competitive order across the grid.
Piastri has emerged as Red Bull’s preferred option
At the same time, speculation surrounding Piastri’s position has also intensified. McLaren have repeatedly stated publicly that they remain committed to the Australian driver, whose stock in the paddock has risen dramatically over the past two seasons.
However, according to a report from Autosport, Piastri’s manager, former Red Bull driver Mark Webber, has already been sounding out potential opportunities elsewhere — including exploratory discussions with Red Bull.
The publication claims that Red Bull view Piastri as a standout candidate who could potentially replace Verstappen in the future should the reigning champion decide to leave the team.
Piastri is currently under contract with McLaren until the end of the 2027 Formula 1 season.
Major obstacles still stand in the way
Despite the growing rumours, there are enormous barriers preventing any immediate blockbuster swap from materialising.
Verstappen and Piastri are both tied to long-term agreements with their current teams, and neither Red Bull nor McLaren has publicly indicated that negotiations regarding a driver exchange are underway.
A move of this magnitude would also require complex contractual and financial agreements, as well as broader strategic decisions from both organisations.
Nevertheless, Formula 1 has repeatedly demonstrated that unexpected twists in the driver market can develop rapidly once momentum builds behind the scenes.
The shock announcement that Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari in 2025 is the clearest recent example of how quickly the landscape can change, even when leading drivers appear to have long-term futures elsewhere.
For now, the Verstappen–Piastri scenario remains firmly in the realm of speculation, but it is already one of the biggest talking points in the Formula 1 paddock.
