Villeneuve Blames Elkann – Updated 19:40 UK
Jacques Villeneuve has criticised Ferrari chairman John Elkann for publicly reprimanding Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, arguing that the drivers had done nothing to warrant such remarks. The 1997 world champion said that Elkann’s comments fit a long-running pattern in Ferrari’s history of relationships with star drivers deteriorating, from Prost and Mansell to Alonso and Vettel.
Villeneuve suggested that Elkann’s timing may have been influenced by Ferrari’s success in the World Endurance Championship, in contrast to the struggles of the Formula 1 team. However, he warned that publicly airing frustrations only serves to reinforce the negative environment that has plagued Ferrari for years, adding pressure to an already fragile situation.
He also questioned how criticism from the top could boost morale, pointing out that both Hamilton and Leclerc have been urging unity on social media instead of criticising the team. According to Villeneuve, Ferrari’s culture and the long drought without wins have created tension, and Elkann’s remarks risk exacerbating the situation.

Verstappen’s Nordschleife Win Sparks Landmark Sim Racing Rule Change – Updated 13:30 UK
Max Verstappen’s dominant GT3 victory on his Nordschleife debut has prompted a significant change in German motorsport, with sim racing now officially counting towards circuit permit requirements for the first time. The VLN organisation and the German motorsport federation have approved virtual racing as a legitimate route to obtaining the crucial DPN B permit, citing Verstappen’s extensive use of a simulator as an exemplary approach.
Drivers can now earn the permit through one of three routes: the traditional course; completing RCN races; or a new hybrid option combining one RCN event with three clean Digital Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (DNLS) winter rounds. Officials say that Verstappen’s performance demonstrated the real-world value of virtual laps, especially on the notoriously challenging Nordschleife circuit.
VLN sporting director Christian Vormann credited sim racing as Verstappen’s “secret weapon”, and DMSB officials said that the updated rules further bridge the gap between real and digital motorsport. This development is a significant milestone for sim racing, expanding its recognition beyond the realm of entertainment and establishing its role as an accepted training tool in the world of international motorsport.

Piastri says Norris partnership ‘better than ever’ despite title battle – Updated 00:05 UK
Oscar Piastri says that his relationship with his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, has strengthened, even though they are competing against each other for the 2025 championship title. Speaking on the Beyond The Grid podcast, Piastri explained that, after three seasons together, their mutual understanding and respect have only grown.
With three rounds remaining, Norris leads the standings by 24 points, with Piastri in second place and Max Verstappen still in contention. McLaren has maintained its neutral stance, refusing to favour either driver in the title run-in provided they keep their on-track battles clean — a principle that was put to the test during incidents in Canada and Singapore.
Piastri acknowledged that the dynamic has changed as the pressure mounts, yet he insisted that the partnership remains robust. Although Norris’s recent form has pushed him ahead in the standings, Piastri has not reached the podium since Monza, yet he remains confident in the relationship and the team’s approach.
Ferrari Panic as Leclerc’s 2026 Exit Clause Emerges
A newly reported exit clause in Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari contract has sparked serious concern in Maranello, putting additional pressure on an already challenging 2025 season. According to the Italian outlet Fanpage, both Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton could leave Ferrari ‘without penalties’ at the end of 2026, should the team fail to produce a title-contending car under the new regulations. While Ferrari has not confirmed the clauses, the possibility has caused alarm given the team’s current form.
The team has endured a winless season and slipped to fourth in the constructors’ standings after a disastrous São Paulo weekend that saw both drivers retire. Chairman John Elkann has publicly urged Hamilton and Leclerc to “focus on driving”, but the bigger worry is that they could both leave at the same time, forcing a major rebuild for 2027 while rivals push ahead with momentum into the new ruleset.
Leclerc’s clause is reportedly so broad that he could even leave after winning the championship. Interest in the Monegasque driver is already growing, with Aston Martin monitoring his situation for 2027, and his management reportedly sounding out Red Bull in case Max Verstappen leaves. There has also been speculation that Leclerc could swap seats with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in 2027.
Lazenby reveals Horner’s plan for F1 return after private talks
Simon Lazenby says he is aware of Christian Horner’s comeback strategy, having held several “off-the-record” conversations with the former Red Bull team boss. Since leaving in September, Horner has been linked with several teams, most notably Alpine, and is reportedly meeting investors to secure a stake in whichever team he joins. Lazenby confirmed that Horner wants ‘skin in the game’, mirroring figures such as Toto Wolff, who hold ownership stakes.
Alpine remains a logical destination for Horner due to his long-standing friendship with Flavio Briatore, though Haas has also recently emerged as an option. Lazenby believes that, given the current Concord Agreement constraints and the sport’s rising financial barriers, Horner is more likely to buy into an existing team than start a new one.
Reports suggest that Horner was envious of Wolff’s part-ownership of Mercedes, and that this is now driving his determination to return as a shareholder rather than a hired team principal. While Wolff prepares to sell a small portion of his stake in what could be a record-breaking deal, Horner is reportedly positioning himself for a similar ownership-driven role as he seeks a way back into the Formula 1 paddock.
