Did Max Verstappen’s Brother-in-Law Just Drop a Mercedes Bombshell? Or Was It Just a Brazilian Babble? Max Verstappen’s possible defection from Red Bull to Mercedes has been the sport’s most persistent rumour since Christian Horner’s grip on Red Bull began loosening like a faulty DRS flap. But now, the latest twist in the tale hasn’t come from a paddock insider, a leaked yacht logbook, or a cryptic Toto Wolff eyebrow raise—it’s come from the family WhatsApp group. Allegedly.
That’s right. This time it’s Nelson Piquet Jr., the lesser-known and less-celebrated former Formula 1 driver, who may—or may not—have confirmed what Verstappen himself has been rather cagey about: that he’s talking to Mercedes and a move for 2026 is on the cards.
Of course, the internet did what it always does best: took a few ambiguous words, turned them into a firestorm, and set Twitter/X ablaze with gifs of Toto smirking and Christian Horner flipping tables.
So what exactly did Piquet Jr. say? And was it just harmless speculation, or the Brazilian equivalent of accidentally announcing your sister’s pregnancy before she’s had the 12-week scan?
The Piquet-Verstappen Family Tree of Tension
To understand the gravity (or comedy) of this situation, it helps to remember that Max Verstappen is dating Kelly Piquet—the daughter of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet Sr.—and they recently welcomed a baby daughter named Lily. Add to that the fact that Kelly already has a daughter from her relationship with former Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat, and you’ve got a rather tangled web of Formula 1 relations.
Kelly’s brother, Nelson Piquet Jr., raced in F1 back in the late 2000s with Renault, most infamously remembered for his role in the “Crashgate” scandal—when he deliberately crashed to help teammate Fernando Alonso win in Singapore. Since then, Piquet Jr. has taken on a new role: occasional commentator, podcast guest, and now, possible Verstappen transfer leak machine.
Appearing on the Brazilian podcast Pelas Pistas, Piquet Jr. was quizzed about Max’s future and whether he’d really be ditching the Red Bull empire in favour of a silver suit and Toto’s comforting embrace.
“They’re talking to each other,” Piquet Jr. said, “everyone knows that, right? It remains to be seen whether they’ll reach a contractual agreement, right? But that it’s an option—everyone knows that—it’s being discussed.”
So… what did we learn? That something might be happening, or might not be, but everyone knows it is—or might be. Classic F1 transfer talk, just delivered with a familial twist.
Max to Announce in August? Apparently So
According to Piquet Jr., Verstappen is expected to make his decision by August. That’s a lot more specific than Verstappen himself has dared to be, although it’s unclear whether this is based on private conversations over Sunday barbecue, or just a best guess powered by Brazilian optimism and podcast adrenaline.
“He will drive [in 2026],” Piquet Jr. confidently added, putting to bed the separate speculation that Max might pull a Rosberg and retire young—something many found hard to believe given the Dutchman’s obsession with domination and disdain for mediocrity.
For now, Piquet Jr. still expects Max to stay at Red Bull, but made no secret of the fact that he personally would find a switch to Mercedes “more exciting.” Whether that was meant as a swipe at Red Bull’s current team atmosphere or just an innocent comment from someone who likes a bit of drama is anyone’s guess.
Mercedes’ Seat Dilemma: Russell or Antonelli?
The most eyebrow-raising moment came when Piquet Jr. matter-of-factly predicted who would be booted from Mercedes if Max were to sign on the dotted line.
“It will be Antonelli,” he said bluntly.
Just like that. No hesitation, no hedging. As if ousting the 17-year-old Mercedes protégé—touted as the second coming of Lewis Hamilton—was no more complicated than choosing between espresso and cappuccino.
That remark has sent waves through Italian motorsport media, where Kimi Antonelli is being treated like a national treasure-in-waiting. Toto Wolff himself has publicly backed Antonelli as Mercedes’ long-term future, so the idea of sacrificing him instead of the underperforming George Russell feels… spicy.
But Piquet Jr. wasn’t done yet. He floated a possible alternative reality: George Russell heading to Red Bull. He even envisioned a dream team of Sainz and Russell replacing Verstappen and Tsunoda.
And let’s not forget Piquet Jr. gave a nod to Isack Hadjar—the Racing Bulls rookie punching above his weight this season—as a wildcard replacement if Verstappen suddenly disappeared from the grid.
Because why not throw a dart at the silly season board and see what sticks?
Did He Spill the Beans or Just Stir the Pot?
So, was this an actual leak from someone with inside knowledge, or just another case of a retired driver letting his imagination run wild on a podcast? After all, this wouldn’t be the first time a Piquet stirred up a bit of F1 chaos—although usually it involves walls and deliberate crashes.
Given how cagey Verstappen has been in recent weeks—and how closely the Piquets and Verstappens are intertwined—Piquet Jr.’s words were always going to be scrutinised, whether they were innocent musings or not.
But in a world where yacht locations, private jet flights, and coffee shop sightings are treated like Kremlin-level intelligence, even a vague comment from a brother-in-law can send the F1 rumour mill into warp speed.
The Verdict: Loose Lips or Strategic Tease?
Ultimately, this might not be the grand reveal many Verstappen-to-Mercedes truthers had hoped for. There’s still no official word, no leaked contract, no Toto Wolff paparazzi shots with a pen and a grin. But what it does show is that even the most seemingly harmless family chatter can spark a media storm—especially when it involves the reigning World Champion and the sport’s most enigmatic team boss.
One thing’s for certain: until Max himself speaks, this saga is far from over. And if he does announce something in August, we might all owe Nelson Piquet Jr. a little apology—or at least a shoutout for the accidental scoop of the season.
But what do you think? Was this a slip-up from someone with insider knowledge, or just hot air on a slow podcast day? Could Antonelli really be booted before he even begins? And would a Russell-Sainz Red Bull lineup make sense, or is that just another round of F1 fan fiction?
