Newey drops Verstappen bombshell

Last Updated on June 9 2025, 9:42 pm

With speculation over Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 future intensifying, the newly appointed Aston Martin technical guru has weighed in with a characteristically candid assessment of the Dutchman’s motivations, fuelling talk that the four-time world champion could be set for a sensational switch from Red Bull to Aston Martin.

Speaking in Monaco during his first public appearance with the Silverstone-based outfit, Newey did not attempt to play down the possibility of a Verstappen move. In fact, he may have added fuel to the fire with a bombshell statement that suggest the Dutchman won’t be staying for much longer at Red Bull.

“Max will always chase whoever he thinks will produce the fastest car,” he told Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle. “He’s a very simple beast, and I mean that in the most complimentary way. He just wants a fast car that allows him to show his talent.”

These words will be ringing in the ears of Red Bull’s senior management, who are already navigating a turbulent 2025 campaign marred by internal unrest, declining performance and persistent speculation surrounding the future of team principal Christian Horner. With Honda — Red Bull’s current power unit partner — set to supply engines to Aston Martin in 2026, the timing of Newey’s remarks is no coincidence.

The Newey-Verstappen Dynamic: From Red Bull Success to Aston Martin Temptation

Newey’s admiration for Verstappen is well documented. The pair were instrumental in Red Bull’s dominance in the early 2020s, combining Newey’s aerodynamic expertise with Verstappen’s driving skill to secure four consecutive drivers’ championships between 2021 and 2024.

However, Newey’s sudden exit from Red Bull earlier this year sent shockwaves through the paddock and raised questions about Verstappen’s future.

Now installed as Managing Technical Partner at Aston Martin, Newey’s influence could be pivotal in transforming the Lawrence Stroll-owned team from midfield contenders into title threats. The project has already attracted Honda, who will become Aston Martin’s works engine supplier from 2026. Add Fernando Alonso, who has already been confirmed for 2026, and Aston Martin’s infrastructure suddenly looks much more championship-ready than Red Bull’s increasingly fragmented operation.

“I’ve always had two regrets in my recent career,” Newey admitted in Monaco.

“Not having had the opportunity to work with Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso. Now I have the opportunity to make up for one of those two regrets.”

While this statement was made in the context of working with Alonso, paddock insiders noted that Verstappen’s name was not ruled out, especially since Newey and Honda now both have an Aston Martin badge on their chests.

Exit clauses and contractual flexibility: Could Verstappen Really Leave?

On paper, Verstappen is tied to Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season. However, the contract includes performance-based exit clauses, chief among them a stipulation that could allow Verstappen to leave if he is not in the top four of the drivers’ championship by mid-season.

This may have been seen as a formality when the deal was signed. But Red Bull’s recent slump — including a disastrous Spanish Grand Prix, where Verstappen finished tenth and team morale hit new lows — has made the once hypothetical scenario far more plausible.

If Verstappen were to activate the clause, he would immediately become the most sought-after free agent in Formula 1 history. Aston Martin, with its new factory, works engine deal and Newey at the helm, would almost certainly be first in line.

The Verstappen equation: Loyalty vs. legacy

So what is really motivating Verstappen at this stage of his career? According to Newey, the answer is simple: “Max just wants the fastest car.”

This philosophy aligns with Verstappen’s unapologetic and laser-focused approach to racing. He has been loyal to Red Bull since 2016, but loyalty has never been his defining characteristic. Results are. If Red Bull can’t provide him with the means to win, there’s no reason to think he won’t seek opportunities elsewhere, especially when those opportunities include familiar faces and rising potential.

Then there’s the matter of timing. At 27 years old in 2025, Verstappen will be entering the peak of his career. A move to Aston Martin in 2026 would see him in the perfect position to spearhead the new engine regulations, potentially with a Newey-designed car and Honda horsepower behind him. It’s a combination that has conquered F1 before. Why not again?

Aston Martin’s all-in strategy: Alonso, Honda, Newey… and Max?

With Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll already confirmed for 2026, Aston Martin’s driver line-up appears complete. However, in Formula 1, contracts can be bought out, reshuffled or quietly amended behind the scenes if a more valuable opportunity arises. If Verstappen wants the seat, it will be made available — likely at Stroll’s expense, despite his father’s ownership of the team.

The key figure in all of this, of course, is Lawrence Stroll. Renowned for his aggressive approach to business and his relentless determination to make Aston Martin a title contender, Stroll has already invested hundreds of millions to attract the sport’s most prominent figures. If he believes that Verstappen is the final piece of the puzzle, he won’t hesitate.

For now, Aston Martin’s messaging remains focused on stability. However, no one in the paddock seriously believes that the team wouldn’t throw open the doors for Max Verstappen, especially if it meant making a definitive statement ahead of Formula 1’s seismic 2026 reset.

McLaren huge implosion

Red Bull’s response: A growing sense of uncertainty

Back in Milton Keynes, Red Bull’s leadership is facing a mounting crisis. Christian Horner is under more pressure than ever before, internal tensions have spilled into the open, and the performance of the RB21 has been alarmingly inconsistent. Verstappen himself has looked increasingly frustrated, both on and off the track.

While the Verstappen camp has officially remained silent about a potential move, insiders suggest that there is now an active evaluation going on behind the scenes. Each time McLaren or Ferrari finish ahead of Red Bull, the case for Verstappen to consider his options becomes stronger.

If Red Bull cannot turn things around quickly, then the unthinkable could soon become reality. The team that built its modern dynasty around Max Verstappen could lose him to a rival… not just any rival, but one led by the very man who helped make him a champion.

The Transfer Rumour That Refuses to Die

Adrian Newey’s comments in Monaco may have sounded casual, even diplomatic. But, for those reading between the lines, they were anything but.

By describing Verstappen as someone who ‘will always chase the fastest car’, Newey has effectively endorsed the idea that Red Bull’s top asset is up for grabs if they don’t perform well. By joining Aston Martin at this crucial moment, Newey has created a very real and tempting alternative.

Red Bull’s house is no longer in order. Aston Martin, on the other hand, is beginning to look like Formula 1’s next great powerhouse. If Max Verstappen decides to make the leap, Adrian Newey will be waiting for him.

MORE F1 NEWS – McLaren flexi-wings evade new FIA testing

The much awaited Spanish Grand Prix and the new technical directive introduced by the FIA to deal with flexible bodywork proved to be a damp squib. But for Red Bull attempting an audacious three stop strategy, the race would have been the usual procession we have come to know, and not love in Barcelona.

The anticipation for the penultimate F1 Grand Prix at the circuit de Catalunya was high, given the performance Red Bull appeared to have unlocked in the RB21 just two rounds earlier in Imola. There not only was Verstappen quickest in qualifying for the third time this season, but for the first time at the head of the field, the world champion drove away from the McLaren’s with ease after lap one.

Red Bull had introduced a big floor upgrade at the Emilia-Romagna weekend which they hoped would improve the downforce on their car, but without the associated drag. On its first outing it appeared as though it was the match for the McLaren 2025 package – flexi wings or not. Yet Imola was on the cool side for racing but come the searing heat of Spain, once again the MCL38 re-asserted its dominance…. READ MORE

  1. At least if Max Verstappen did go to Aston Martin we’d be spared the incessant speculation about whom his next team-mate will be.

  2. I cannot agree with Adrian Newey. I don’t believe MV DOES simply want the FASTEST car. I think he just wants a truly COMPETITIVE car: his abilities would then allow him to contest for wins in such a situation
