Is Schumacher’s F1 return on the cards? Cadillac Nears Crucial Driver Decision – After months of speculation and behind-the-scenes discussions, Cadillac, the newly arrived Formula 1 outfit, appears to be closing in on its long-awaited driver line-up for its debut season. With the shortlist narrowing, the spotlight has once again turned towards Mick Schumacher, whose hopes of returning to the F1 grid could depend on key decisions in the coming weeks.

Cadillac is set to join the Formula 1 grid in partnership with Andretti Global as part of a bold American entry, but has kept a low profile throughout the early phases of its driver recruitment. However, with the team’s F1 debut approaching, plans are quietly accelerating behind the scenes. According to multiple sources, including Racer.com, Cadillac’s management is now expected to enter a decisive phase of talks with its shortlisted drivers, with a final pairing to be determined ‘in the coming weeks’.

It has been a tight-lipped process so far

The American outfit has revealed little publicly about the candidates under consideration. However, they have confirmed that the pool of drivers includes a mix of experienced F1 veterans and up-and-coming talent, including Mick Schumacher, the 26-year-old son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Having not held a race seat since his departure from Haas at the end of 2022, Schumacher has remained on the fringes of the F1 paddock, working as a reserve driver for Mercedes while also competing in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine. While some had previously dismissed his chances of returning to a full-time Formula 1 role, insiders suggest he is still in the running.

It is believed that the team is aiming for a combination of experience and marketability — both of which are crucial for a brand like Cadillac, which is looking to make an impact in a crowded global motorsport landscape. As the field narrows, Schumacher remains in contention.

Pérez leads the veteran charge

The leading candidate to land a Cadillac seat remains Sergio Pérez. The four-time Grand Prix winner is currently out of contract at the end of the 2024 season, having been dropped by Red Bull following a turbulent campaign. Despite being linked with several midfield teams, including Alpine and Mercedes, a fresh start with a new American manufacturer could be appealing to the 34-year-old, particularly if other opportunities dry up.

Sources claim that Pérez has already reached an agreement in principle with Cadillac, but he is holding back from making a final commitment. The Mexican veteran is reportedly waiting to see whether a move to Mercedes or Alpine might materialise, or even a shock move elsewhere, before making a firm decision.

His presence would give Cadillac a proven race winner with global appeal, particularly in the North American and Latin American markets — something that General Motors may value highly.

The American angle: Crawford and Herta in the mix

As an American team backed by a historic US brand, Cadillac is under pressure to include a homegrown driver. Two standout candidates in this regard are Jak Crawford and Colton Herta.

Crawford, who is just 19 years old, has been climbing the ranks in Formula 2 and is in the Red Bull junior programme. While his age and inexperience might count against him for a team looking for immediate results, his potential and nationality make him an appealing long-term prospect.

Meanwhile, Colton Herta has long been viewed as a future F1 hopeful. Despite previous issues with Super Licence eligibility, the 24-year-old IndyCar star remains on the radar. Herta would offer Cadillac a high-profile American driver with strong racing credentials and a built-in domestic fanbase.

While both drivers would bring value to the team, neither has any experience of racing in Formula 1, which could ultimately push Cadillac to opt for a more seasoned pair for its inaugural season.

The experienced duo of Bottas and Zhou are still in the running

Cadillac is also reportedly considering the former Alfa Romeo pairing of Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou. Both drivers are out of contract after being dropped in the Sauber-to-Audi transition, but neither has officially left the F1 paddock.

Bottas, a ten-time race winner and former Mercedes number two, could provide invaluable technical feedback and experience. Zhou, meanwhile, offers commercial opportunities in the Asian market and has demonstrated consistent performance throughout his F1 career.

If Cadillac prioritises immediate competitiveness and stability over marketing fireworks, either or both could form a reliable foundation for the new operation.

Mick Schumacher’s quiet resurgence

Then there is Mick Schumacher. Once considered out of the running, his candidacy has seemingly gained new traction in recent weeks. According to whispers in the paddock, Schumacher has impressed Cadillac officials in recent behind-the-scenes meetings. Notably, he attended the Indy 500 last weekend — a key General Motors showcase event — sparking speculation that talks between his team and Cadillac may have resumed in earnest.

Although there has been no official confirmation of further negotiations, reports suggest that a more concrete conversation took place during the Miami Grand Prix earlier this month, where Mick allegedly met with several Cadillac executives in private. Those familiar with the discussions claim that the German driver left a positive impression — possibly enough to revive his standing within the internal selection process.

Now aged 26, Schumacher still carries the cachet of his famous surname, but he has also matured as a driver. His time with Mercedes has enabled him to develop technically, particularly in terms of simulator and setup work. While he may lack the race results of his rivals, few candidates can match his blend of pedigree, professionalism and potential.

A final decision is imminent

With the initial ‘casting’ phase of its driver recruitment now complete, Cadillac is entering the final stretch. Over the next few weeks, the team is expected to conduct a series of intensive interviews and simulations to evaluate not only raw performance, but also personality, market suitability, and developmental compatibility.

As the decision approaches, all signs point towards a pragmatic yet brand-savvy approach from the American manufacturer. Pairing a race winner like Pérez with an American rookie would be a bold, headline-grabbing move. Alternatively, pairing Schumacher with Bottas or Zhou could strike a balance between experience and commercial power.

In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, the margin between success and failure is extremely slim, especially for a new team entering such a challenging arena. For Cadillac, the next few weeks will not only shape the story of its debut season, but also potentially the entire trajectory of its F1 journey.

For Mick Schumacher, it could be the long-awaited turning point in a career that has not yet been written off.

Once upon a time in Formula One land, Monaco was deemed the jewel in the crown venue for motor racing as the fifties Hollywood set along with European royalty graced the streets of the famous French Riviera principality.

And it will then been surprise to learn that the drivers with the most multiple victories all (but 2) come from an era before the turn of the millennium. Ayrton Senna with 6 wins tops the table, followed by Michael Schumacher and Graham Hill with 5 and behind them is Alain Prost with four victories in Monte Carlo.

Over the last quarter of a century, F1 in Monaco has lost its pizazz and is challenged Singapore in terms being a place of corporate attendance where deals outside of F1 are being done.
