Verstappen to Mercedes? Shock truth behind the rumours

Last Updated on March 12 2025, 1:56 pm

Verstappen’s future sparks speculation amid Mercedes transfer rumours – As the 2025 Formula One season approaches, Max Verstappen remains firmly in Red Bull’s corner as they prepare for another championship challenge. The Dutch driver, now a four-time world champion, is under contract with the reigning champions until 2028.

However, the long-term stability of his tenure with Red Bull has been called into question as rumours of a potential move elsewhere continue to swirl. Amid speculation linking Verstappen to both Mercedes and Aston Martin, his father, Jos Verstappen, has finally broken the silence on what the future might hold.

Max Verstappen prepares for fifth title defence

The coming season promises to be another intense one, with Max Verstappen looking to defend his Formula One title for the fifth year in a row. With Red Bull providing a dominant package in recent seasons, the Dutchman remains the favourite to win the championship.

However, this period of dominance has not shielded Red Bull from internal struggles and external pressures.

Lewis Hamilton’s surprise move to Ferrari left a vacancy at Mercedes, sparking speculation as to who would inherit one of the most coveted seats on the grid. While Mercedes ultimately opted to promote young talent Kimi Antonelli as Hamilton’s replacement, the possibility of Verstappen joining the German outfit has not been completely ruled out.

Given his talent and success, discussions surrounding his future remain a hot topic, especially as the dynamics within Red Bull continue to evolve.

Uncertainty looms over Verstappen’s long-term future

Despite having a contract that theoretically ties him to Red Bull for another four years, Verstappen’s long-term commitment is by no means guaranteed. Historically, F1 has shown that contracts can be broken or renegotiated when the right opportunities arise. With several teams keen to secure his services, Verstappen would have no shortage of options should he decide to seek a new challenge.

One of the most vocal contenders for his signature is Mercedes. Although they are committed to Antonelli for now, team boss Toto Wolff has openly admitted that Verstappen would be the ideal candidate to lead the Silver Arrows back to championship glory.

Meanwhile, Aston Martin have also emerged as potential suitors, with reports suggesting that a massive multi-billion pound deal could be in the works to lure Verstappen away from Red Bull.

The Dutch driver’s future has become the subject of intense speculation and while nothing concrete has yet materialized, his departure from Red Bull cannot be entirely ruled out. As the power struggle in Formula One continues, teams are positioning themselves strategically in the knowledge that the landscape could change in the coming years.

Jos Verstappen addresses the rumours

Amidst the growing uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen’s future, his father, Jos Verstappen, has provided some insight. Speaking to GPblog, Jos dismissed the rumours as mere social media chatter.

“It’s mostly on social media, people are making a big deal out of it. At the moment there’s nothing. There are no other contracts. The only contract that exists is the one with Red Bull. We’re just waiting for that to come through and we’ll see how it goes this year.”

His comments suggest that, for the time being, Verstappen’s focus is solely on Red Bull and the upcoming season. However, his statement also leaves room for interpretation.

By saying “we’ll see how it goes this year”, he suggests that the future remains open. Should circumstances change at Red Bull, or should Verstappen himself seek a new challenge, negotiations with other teams could become a reality.

Could Verstappen really leave Red Bull?

While it is too early to say whether Verstappen will stay at Red Bull for the full term of his contract, the factors that could influence his decision are already in motion. Red Bull has been a dominant force in F1, but internal tensions have occasionally surfaced.

The working relationship between Verstappen and team principal Christian Horner has been largely successful, but if cracks begin to appear – whether due to internal politics, car performance issues or rival teams presenting better opportunities – his departure could become a real possibility.

Mercedes, despite their struggles since the regulatory changes in 2022, remain one of the most prestigious teams on the grid. With the departure of Hamilton, Wolff is likely to continue monitoring the driver market closely. If Antonelli fails to live up to expectations, the opportunity for Verstappen to join the team could open up sooner rather than later.

Aston Martin, backed by considerable financial resources and ambitious long-term plans, is another intriguing option. Team owner Lawrence Stroll has been aggressive in his pursuit of success, and with Fernando Alonso nearing the end of his career, Verstappen could be seen as the perfect successor.

What’s next for Verstappen?

For now, Max Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull and will look to add another title to his already impressive career. However, Formula 1 is an ever-evolving sport where driver moves can happen unexpectedly. The ongoing speculation surrounding his future is unlikely to fade, especially as the driver market continues to shift.

The next few months will be crucial. If Red Bull maintain their dominance and provide Verstappen with a competitive car, the likelihood of him staying increases. However, if the team faces internal instability, or if Mercedes and Aston Martin make compelling offers, the saga surrounding Verstappen’s future will only intensify.

As the new season unfolds, all eyes will be on Red Bull and Verstappen – not only to see if he can defend his title, but also to see if the seeds of a blockbuster transfer are being planted.

MORE F1 NEWS – Vegas GP a financial flop for Liberty Media

Las Vegas was the latest circuit to feature on the F1 calendar. The inaugural event in 2023 was hyped to the Max with an opening ceremony where the drivers were presented rising up through the stage like an old fashioned whirler organ.

But come the first day on track, the show flopped, as a lose drain cover practically destroyed Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari just minutes into the first practice session. FP1 was abandoned as the circuit was checked for other huge loose pieces of metal.

The knock on effect saw FP2 begin at around 2am  but by then the ushers had completed their daily working hours allowance and there was the farcical sight of the fans who had stayed up, being evicted from the grandstands.

Further, there were rows with a number of hospitality venues along the route who had not partnered with the F1 road show. They were hit with big cash demands for each seat in their property otherwise they were threatened with…READ MORE ON THIS STORY
