Ocon at Ferrari: Hamilton hype is crazy – Ocon reflects on ‘crazy’ Hamilton hype during visit to Maranello – Esteban Ocon may have had to bid farewell to Alpine after a turbulent 2024 season, but life as a Haas driver has already come with some unique benefits. One of those perks recently took him to the heart of Ferrari’s legendary headquarters in Maranello, where he was given the opportunity to test on the Scuderia’s state-of-the-art simulator.
This privilege is made possible by the close technical partnership between Haas and Ferrari, a collaboration that extends beyond power units and components to include access to key resources.
However, Ocon’s visit to the historic site coincided with a momentous occasion for Ferrari and Formula One as a whole. The day he arrived in Maranello happened to be the same day that Lewis Hamilton made his highly anticipated first visit as an official Ferrari driver, igniting an unprecedented wave of excitement among the Tifosi.
The Frenchman found himself at the epicentre of a frenzy that, for a moment, transformed the small Italian town into a cauldron of emotion and celebration.
The Maranello frenzy: “It was crazy”
As Hamilton set foot in Maranello for the first time as a Ferrari driver, he was met with an overwhelming reception. Thousands of fans gathered outside the factory gates and lined the streets of the normally quiet town, hoping to catch a glimpse of the seven-time world champion in his new colours. For Ocon, witnessing the hysteria first hand was a surreal experience.
“It was crazy to see all that enthusiasm that day in Maranello, in Fiorano,” Ocon recalled. “It was something special.
The sheer scale of Hamilton’s arrival seemed to take everyone by surprise, even within the team. As Ocon prepared to leave the Ferrari facility after his simulator session, he quickly realised the extent of the chaos outside.
“I’m quite happy that it was a coincidence that I was there on the same day,” he admitted. “It was just crazy, there was a stream of fans everywhere, around the factory, around the track. I remember trying to go out the main exit with my suitcase and the security guys came and said: ‘No, not that way, go the other way. Because there were so many people in front of it that it was difficult to manage.
The sight of an entire city coming to a virtual standstill in anticipation of Hamilton’s arrival was something Ocon had never seen before. Even in a sport as passionate as Formula 1, where driver transfers often spark intense emotions, this excitement was on another level.

A historic day for Ferrari and F1
From Ocon’s perspective, what happened in Maranello that day was more than just a welcome event for a new driver-it was a moment of historical significance for Formula 1.
“It was a very special day, an incredible day for Formula 1 and certainly for Lewis and all the fans,” he said.
Ocon, who worked with Hamilton during his time as a Mercedes junior and reserve driver, has immense respect for the Briton’s achievements. Seeing him in Ferrari’s iconic red for the first time was something Ocon described as a “beautiful sight”.
“He is the most impressive driver of our generation,” declared Ocon. “And the most passionate of our generation. It’s a beautiful image for everyone and I can’t wait to get back on the track with him.
For many in the F1 world, the image of Hamilton in Ferrari red still feels surreal. After more than a decade of dominance with Mercedes, the idea of him driving for the Scuderia marks a seismic shift in the sport’s landscape.
Hamilton overwhelmed by Ferrari fans’ passion
While the frenzy in Maranello may have been overwhelming for spectators like Ocon, Hamilton himself was deeply moved by the reception he received from the Ferrari faithful. Speaking about his first experiences as a member of the Scuderia, the seven-time world champion admitted that the scale of the team’s passion left a deep impression on him.
“The scale and sheer size of the team, the passion when you actually become part of it and feel it,” said Hamilton, reflecting on his arrival.
For Hamilton, the energy surrounding Ferrari was not just an abstract concept – it was something tangible, something that could be felt in every corner of the team’s headquarters.
“It’s something real, almost measurable,” he explained. “And yes, it seems to run through the whole factory.”
Ferrari’s mystique has always been a powerful force in F1. Even for a driver as accomplished as Hamilton, joining the team represents more than just a career move – it’s an immersion into a legacy that has captivated generations of motorsport enthusiasts.
“It’s a place you just want to be,” Hamilton continued. “Just like when we worked here, we were always here until ten o’clock at night – and it’s like nobody wants to go home. Everyone is just so dedicated.

The start of a new chapter in F1
With the 2025 season fast approaching, the anticipation surrounding Hamilton’s move to Ferrari continues to build. His arrival signals the start of a new era for the Scuderia, one that fans hope will see them return to championship glory.
For Ocon, his chance encounter with the madness at Maranello was a reminder of the sport’s unique ability to inspire passion on an almost unimaginable scale. Although he was there for a very different reason, he left with a deeper appreciation of just how much Hamilton’s presence at Ferrari means to the Tifosi.
As the F1 world waits to see how Hamilton’s first season in red unfolds, one thing is already clear – his move to Ferrari has reignited a level of excitement and hope that hasn’t been seen in years. And if the scenes in Maranello are any indication, the 2025 season could be one of the most exciting in recent memory.

MORE F1 NEWS – Carlos Sainz calls out the FIA
Carlos Sainz was last year the victim of a global merging of brands as Lewis Hamilton picked up the phone to Ferrari chairman. John Elkann, to see if there was room at the inn in Maranello. The Brackley based outfit were responsible for handing Lewis six of his seven world titles, but they bit the buffers when the new ground effect regulations came into force in 2022.
Hamilton finished third in the drivers title race in 2023 and signed a a contract extension late on the year, which was announced a ‘multi year deal’, yet while the ink was still wet Hamilton decided the Mercedes team were not solving the problems which would return him to wining ways.
The victim in all this was Carlos Sainz, who had established himself firmly in the Ferrari F1 setup and whilst not quite delivering the results of his team mate Charles Leclerc, the Spaniard was no number two to the Monegasque. In fact Sainz and Leclerc have different driving styles and often when one would struggle over a race weekend, the other would perform well…. READ MORE ON THIS STORY
