The 2025 Formula One season is set to usher in a wave of change, the most significant being Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes to join Ferrari. This seismic move left Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff with the crucial task of selecting a replacement for George Russell. Rather than look for an experienced driver, Wolff turned to young talent and selected 18-year-old Italian prodigy Kimi Antonelli.
While Antonelli’s signing was seen as a bold gamble, it naturally led to comparisons with Hamilton, who leaves an illustrious legacy at Mercedes. However, Antonelli has made it clear that he does not see himself as Hamilton’s direct successor.
Kimi Antonelli: “I’m just the next Mercedes driver”
With immense expectations on his shoulders, Antonelli steps into the Mercedes seat previously occupied by one of F1’s most decorated champions. The weight of replacing a seven-time world champion would be daunting for any driver, let alone one making his F1 debut. However, Antonelli is determined to make his own way in the sport.
Speaking to GPblog, the young Italian explained his perspective: “I feel like I’m just a new Mercedes driver. Of course, to say that I’m replacing Lewis Hamilton… I don’t think that’s really true. He’s such an important figure in the sport and he’s done so much. I feel like I’m just the next Mercedes driver and I really want to make my way and try to get good results.
By distancing himself from the comparisons, Antonelli aims to focus on his own journey rather than stepping into Hamilton’s shadow. He acknowledges Hamilton’s legacy, but remains determined to make his own mark in the sport.

A high-stakes Formula 1 debut
Antonelli’s rapid rise to F1 has been nothing short of remarkable. As part of Mercedes’ junior driver programme, the Italian was identified as a future star early in his career. His dominant performances in the junior categories only strengthened the belief that he was ready for the top level of motorsport.
However, the transition from junior series to competing against the best drivers in the world is not an easy one. Antonelli himself recognises the scale of the challenge ahead.
“It won’t be easy because, in my first year in F1, I’m ultimately competing against the other 19 best drivers in the world. Of course, the world of motorsport, and Formula 1 in particular, can be very brutal at times.
Despite this, Antonelli is determined to focus on his performance rather than external pressure.
“The thing is, I’m just going to try and concentrate on myself. Try to work day in, day out, weekend in, weekend out and try to prove myself. The mindset will be to try and win and then we’ll see. Like I said, I have good people around me who, especially at the moment, are really trying to help me ignore the outside stuff and just focus on the moment.
His level-headed approach reflects a maturity beyond his years – something that will be crucial in dealing with the intense scrutiny that comes with driving for a top team like Mercedes.

Why did Mercedes choose Antonelli over other candidates?
When Hamilton’s departure was confirmed, speculation was rife as to who would replace him. Established names such as Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz and even Max Verstappen were mentioned in the rumour mill. In the end, however, Mercedes decided to invest in youth by promoting Antonelli.
The decision is in line with Toto Wolff’s long-term vision for the team. Rather than signing a short-term solution, Mercedes have opted to build for the future, much like Red Bull did when they brought in Max Verstappen at a young age.
Antonelli’s familiarity with Mercedes’ systems and his impressive track record in junior categories made him an attractive option. His close relationship with the team’s engineers and his ability to adapt quickly to new challenges are also likely to have played a role in Mercedes’ decision.

The pressure of following a legend
Regardless of Antonelli’s attempts to downplay the “succession” narrative, the reality remains that replacing Lewis Hamilton comes with immense pressure. The Briton delivered multiple world championships and helped make Mercedes the dominant force in F1 during the hybrid era.
Even George Russell, who has already secured his first win with Mercedes, will now have the added responsibility of leading the team in Hamilton’s absence. Antonelli, meanwhile, will have to prove himself in the intense, high-stakes world of F1.
Accustomed to success, Mercedes fans will be hoping that Antonelli can live up to the faith the team has placed in him. While expectations should be managed given his lack of experience, history has shown that young drivers can thrive when given the right support and environment.

What lies ahead for Antonelli and Mercedes?
The 2025 season will be a learning curve for Antonelli. His immediate goal will be to gain experience, understand the intricacies of Formula One and demonstrate his potential.
Mercedes are also entering a new phase. With Russell and Antonelli forming a young driver line-up, the team is betting on talent and long-term growth rather than immediate championship contention. However, the competitive nature of Formula One means that results will always be scrutinised. If Mercedes struggle early in the season, questions will inevitably be asked about their decision to promote Antonelli rather than sign a more experienced driver.
For now, Antonelli remains focused on the task at hand, determined to write his own chapter in Mercedes’ history. Whether he can live up to expectations remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – he is ready to prove that he belongs at the pinnacle of motorsport.
As Formula 1 enters a new era, all eyes will be on Kimi Antonelli. Can he rise to the occasion and become the next great Mercedes driver? Or will the pressure of replacing a legend prove too much? The answers will be revealed on the track when the lights go out for the 2025 season.
