Revealed: Hamilton struggles with his Ferrari at first test

Seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton faced unexpected challenges during his first test session with Scuderia Ferrari. While the much-anticipated test marked a historic moment in Hamilton’s illustrious career, issues with the car’s pedals marred the first outing at Ferrari’s famous Fiorano test track.

Hamilton completed 30 laps in Ferrari’s SF-23, the team’s 2023 Formula One car, during last Wednesday’s test session. The British driver, who recently made the sensational switch from Mercedes to Ferrari, struggled with the pedal configuration from the moment he hit the track.

Despite several attempts to adjust the pedals to his liking, the problem persisted, resulting in two near misses that almost landed Hamilton in the gravel.

The Italian edition of *Motorsport* reported that while the pedal setup proved problematic, Hamilton quickly adapted to the new Ferrari wheel – a significant change after years of familiarity with the Mercedes cockpit layout.

His collaboration with Ferrari race engineer Riccardo Adami also appeared promising, suggesting the potential for a strong working relationship in the future.

Pedal problems: A recurring theme

This isn’t the first time Hamilton has struggled with the ergonomics of the cockpit. During his time with Mercedes, the seven-time champion often expressed concerns about the car’s seating position.

Speaking at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton explained: “We sit closer to the front wheels than any other driver. If you sat in your car at home with the wheels right under your legs, you wouldn’t be happy approaching a roundabout”

These complaints highlight the importance of comfort and precision in a Formula 1 cockpit, where every detail can affect performance on the track. Ferrari, known for its meticulous engineering, will no doubt work to address Hamilton’s complaints before the start of the 2024 season.

A memorable moment despite setbacks

While the pedal issues have been a challenge, Hamilton has expressed his excitement at driving for Ferrari for the first time. Reflecting on the emotional significance of the day, he said: “When I started the car and drove through the garage door, I had the biggest smile on my face. It reminded me of my first F1 test”.

Adapting to new challenges

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari will not be without its hurdles. Aside from the pedal issues, adapting to the SF-23’s unique characteristics will take time and effort. The Ferrari car has different handling characteristics to the Mercedes cars and Hamilton will need to fine-tune his driving style to suit his new equipment.

His partnership with Riccardo Adami, who has worked with drivers such as Sebastian Vettel, is also a key factor in Hamilton’s adaptation. Adami’s experience and technical expertise could be crucial in helping Hamilton find his rhythm at Ferrari.

The British driver’s vast experience and proven track record make him a valuable asset to Ferrari. However, the road to championship contention will be far from easy.

The team faces stiff competition from Red Bull, Mercedes and an increasingly competitive midfield.
