Stroll courts sponsors with Verstappen… Former champ says ‘BS’ – Aston Martin courts sponsors with Verstappen name: Bold statement or strategic ploy? In a tantalising twist from the world of Formula One, Aston Martin is reportedly using Max Verstappen’s name as bait in sponsorship negotiations.
According to *The Daily Mail*, the British team are hinting at a future with the four-time world champion driving for them, going so far as to promise potential sponsors that Verstappen could deliver them a world championship in the team’s signature green car. While Aston Martin have denied the rumours, the reports have sent the F1 community into a frenzy of speculation.

The Verstappen pitch
At the heart of the story is Aston Martin’s alleged pitch to sponsors that Verstappen will eventually join their ranks. The *Daily Mail* claims that the team is dangling the prospect of a record-breaking deal, potentially worth over a billion euros, to lure Verstappen away from his current team, Red Bull Racing.
This hypothetical deal would reportedly include not only an astronomical salary, but also a stake in the team.
Jefferson Slack, a close ally of team owner Lawrence Stroll, is said to be the main figure behind this audacious proposal. Slack is said to have mentioned Verstappen’s name in discussions with potential partners. According to an unnamed source quoted in *The Daily Mail*, Slack has suggested that Verstappen’s arrival at Aston Martin is inevitable.
“Maybe it’s a ploy to secure the sponsorship deals they want,” the source said, before adding, “But bringing Max on board would make absolute sense for the team’s ambitions.”

Lawrence Stroll’s grand vision
It’s no secret that Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll is determined to turn his team into championship contenders. Known for his aggressive business acumen and relentless drive, Stroll has already invested heavily in the team’s infrastructure and personnel. His ultimate goal is clear: to disrupt the dominant duopoly of Red Bull Racing under Christian Horner and Mercedes under Toto Wolff.
To achieve this, Stroll has spared no expense. Under his leadership, Aston Martin has secured the services of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and upgraded its facilities to rival the best in the sport.
However, at 43, Alonso is approaching the twilight of his career and the team’s other driver, Lance Stroll – Lawrence’s son – has been criticised for his inability to perform consistently at the highest level.
The potential addition of Verstappen, widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers of his generation, would be a game changer. Not only would it make the team more competitive, it would also increase its marketability and appeal to sponsors.

Adrian Newey rumours
Adding fuel to the fire, the *Daily Mail* report also touched on rumours surrounding Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing’s design mastermind.
The source suggested that Newey, who is credited with being instrumental in Verstappen’s success, may have already been offered shares in Aston Martin as an incentive to switch allegiances.
“It is believed that Adrian thinks Lance Stroll is not good enough [to win a world championship] and that Fernando Alonso is too old at 43,” the source said.
The implication is clear: if Aston Martin are to become a dominant force, they may need to replace their current drivers and secure the services of a proven champion such as Verstappen.
Aston Martin denies the claims
Despite the sensational nature of these allegations, Aston Martin have strongly denied the reports. The team has stated that Jefferson Slack did not use Verstappen’s name in sponsorship discussions.
The team has also reiterated its commitment to its current drivers, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, who are both under contract for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
While the public denial is to be expected, it does little to quell the rumours. Speculation continues to swirl around Aston Martin’s long-term strategy and whether the team is indeed laying the groundwork for a blockbuster move involving Verstappen and possibly Newey.

Verstappen’s perspective
For Verstappen, such a move would mark a dramatic change in his career trajectory. Currently dominating the sport with Red Bull Racing, the Dutchman is at the peak of his powers, enjoying a car that is head and shoulders above the competition. It’s hard to see why he would leave such a successful set-up, especially for a team that is still building its way up the grid.
However, Verstappen has at times hinted at a desire for new challenges and has expressed dissatisfaction with F1’s expanding calendar and regulations.
If Aston Martin were to present a compelling vision of its future – complete with a lucrative financial package and the promise of Newey’s engineering genius – it is not entirely implausible that Verstappen might consider the idea.
Hamilton mental fragility questioned

Former F1 champ sceptical: “You win with Ferrari or Mercedes”
Former World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has cast doubt on this potential move, arguing that Verstappen’s desire to win makes a move to Aston Martin unlikely.
Aston Martin have officially denied the rumours.Verstappen, who is contracted to Red Bull until 2028, has previously indicated his loyalty to his current team, but has also left the door open to future opportunities.

Villeneuve weighed in: “Verstappen won’t move to Aston Martin”
Amidst the swirling rumours, Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula One World Champion, has given his views on the matter in an interview with *Action Network*.
While acknowledging Aston Martin’s ambitious plans, Villeneuve questioned whether the team could really live up to Verstappen’s expectations.
“Lawrence Stroll needs someone who is mentally strong and a true fighter to eventually replace Alonso,” said Villeneuve, referring to Aston Martin’s team owner and his vision for a championship-winning line-up.
However, Villeneuve remains unconvinced that Verstappen will make the jump to Aston Martin.
“Verstappen will be wondering what his next step should be,” Villeneuve continued.
“You win with Ferrari and you win with Mercedes, but not with Aston Martin. Like Lewis Hamilton, he just wants to win.”

Alonso’s role at Aston Martin
Villeneuve also spoke about Aston Martin’s current lead driver, Fernando Alonso, and his role in the team’s rise.
Alonso, a two-time world champion, has earned widespread admiration for his performances in underperforming cars throughout his career. Villeneuve highlighted Alonso’s resilience and ability to maximise results even in difficult situations.
“Alonso knows what he has to do to show that he is still a bit better than the rest,” said Villeneuve.
“Like he did at Ferrari when the Ferrari was not a good car, or at McLaren with their terrible engine.
“He fought like a madman and it was impressive to see…”
Despite Alonso’s age – he will be 43 in 2024 – Villeneuve believes the Spaniard remains an asset to Aston Martin.
“If he continues to perform like this, they will keep him. They know that if they have a car that can win, Alonso will deliver.”
However, Villeneuve admits that Alonso’s time in F1 is limited and Aston Martin must prepare for a future without him. While Verstappen’s talent would be a natural fit for the team’s ambitions, Villeneuve doubts the Dutchman would take the risk of joining a team that is still trying to establish itself as a title contender.

The challenges facing Aston Martin
While Aston Martin has made significant strides in recent years, transforming itself from a midfield team to a regular podium contender, it still has a long way to go before it can consistently challenge the likes of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.
The arrival of Honda as an engine supplier in 2026 and the potential addition of Adrian Newey could boost the team’s technical capabilities, but success in F1 often requires years of development and cohesion.
Villeneuve highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Aston Martin’s ability to sustain its growth and deliver a championship-winning car.
“They’ve made big purchases, but there are still question marks,” he said. “They need a driver who can bring the fight, but Verstappen wants to win now.”
