Russell hits back at Verstappen & reveals the ‘truth’

George Russell hits back: “Verstappen has been bullying for years” – The drama in Formula One has taken a sharp turn from racing skills to personal accusations as George Russell and Max Verstappen escalate their public feud.

What began as a dispute over qualifying tactics at the Qatar Grand Prix has turned into an all-out war of words, with Russell now defending himself and taking aim at Verstappen’s behaviour on and off the track. As the F1 season comes to a close in Abu Dhabi, the tension between the two drivers continues to dominate the headlines.

A controversial incident in Qatar sets the scene

The roots of the conflict can be traced back to Qatar, where a qualifying session became the flashpoint for this ongoing dispute. During the session, Verstappen, the reigning F1 world champion, found himself on the stewards’ radar after George Russell claimed he had been obstructed during a slow lap.

Verstappen maintained his line, believing he was not obstructing the Mercedes driver, but Russell lodged a complaint that ultimately led to the stewards penalising Verstappen. The decision cost the Red Bull driver pole position and handed the advantage to Russell.

Verstappen reacted furiously, launching into a tirade during the post-qualifying press conference. “I’ve never seen somebody try to screw somebody else like that,” he said, accusing Russell of unsportsmanlike behaviour. Verstappen added that he was “surprised” and “disappointed” by Russell’s actions and declared that he had “lost all respect” for the British driver.

Russell hits back: “I’m not going to sit here and accept that”

Unwilling to let Verstappen’s comments go unanswered, Russell responded during a media session ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In a lengthy rebuttal, the Mercedes driver called out Verstappen for comments allegedly made during a heated exchange outside the stewards’ room in Qatar.

“I find this all quite ironic,” Russell began, before recounting Verstappen’s explosive remarks.

“On Saturday night he said he would deliberately do everything in his power to crash into me and ‘smash my bloody head against the wall’.”

Russell provided additional context, claiming that Verstappen confronted him after the stewards’ hearing.

“When we came out of the stewards’ room he said to me: ‘I don’t know why you wanted to mess with me like that. I’m so disappointed in you. I wasn’t going to race you tomorrow, I was going to let you pass, but now I’m going to do everything I can to smash your bloody head against the wall if I have to.”

Russell was incredulous at Verstappen’s aggression, describing it as “unnecessarily insulting” and questioning why the Dutchman had taken things to such a personal level.

“It’s very strange to question my integrity when you made comments like that the day before,” Russell added. “I’m not going to sit here and accept that.”

“He’s been bullying people for years”

Russell didn’t stop at the Qatar incident. Instead, he widened his criticism to include Verstappen’s behaviour over the years.

“Verstappen has been bullying people for years. He can’t handle adversity,” Russell said, citing several examples to back up his claims.

The Mercedes driver pointed to moments such as the controversial Saudi Grand Prix in 2021 and the Brazilian Grand Prix the same year, both of which saw Verstappen involved in altercations.

He also pointed to the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2023, the first race of the season where Red Bull’s dominance seemed less certain. According to Russell, Verstappen’s frustration was evident.

“He crashed into Lewis and then insulted his team,” said Russell.

While acknowledging Verstappen’s immense talent and success, Russell criticised the four-time world champion’s inability to deal with setbacks. “Whenever something goes against him, he goes on the attack,” Russell said.

Crossing the line: Russell calls Verstappen’s behaviour ‘unnecessary and disrespectful

For Russell, the personal nature of Verstappen’s comments represents a line being crossed. While on-track rivalries and debates over incidents are part and parcel of Formula One, he argued that Verstappen’s comments in Qatar were a step too far.

“What he said at the last race weekend in Qatar was completely disrespectful and unnecessary,” Russell said.

“We fight hard for what happens on the track – that is part of racing. We fight hard for what happens in the race control booth, but it never gets personal. But now he’s gone too far,” Russell declared.

A season-ending feud

The escalating feud between Verstappen and Russell has become a focal point at the end of the 2023 Formula One season. With Verstappen having already clinched the championship and Mercedes second in the constructors’ standings, the personal animosity between the two drivers provides a dramatic subplot to the final race weekend in Abu Dhabi.

Fans and pundits alike will be watching to see if the rivalry spills over onto the track. Both drivers are known for their competitive instincts and uncompromising approach to racing, making any on-track interaction fraught with potential drama.

The Qatar incident and its aftermath have exposed the simmering tensions between the two drivers, both of whom are expected to be key figures in next year’s championship battle.

For Verstappen, the challenge may be to manage his dominant position without alienating his colleagues, while Russell will be keen to prove he can compete with and hold his own against the world champion.

Whether this feud escalates or cools over the coming months remains to be seen, but it’s sure to keep fans talking and anticipating next season.\
