Verstappen: “I know what the options are”

Red Bull star Verstappen addresses transfer rumours amid F1 and football crossover as the Dutchman responds to speculation about his future saying: “I know what the options are” – Three-time Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen recently addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his future at Red Bull Racing, putting to rest rumours that he is considering a move to another team.

In an exclusive interview with *Sport Bild*, the Dutchman stressed his satisfaction with his current position and shared his unique perspective on career stability and team loyalty, as well as a surprising connection between Red Bull and football.

Staying focused and ‘happy at Red Bull’

Verstappen’s approach to his career is refreshingly simple.

“I never really think about my future in F1,” he said. “I’m happy with what I’m doing and I want to keep doing it.” The 26-year-old champion, who currently leads the championship by 47 points.

The Red Bull driver also addressed the frequent speculation and rumours circulating in the F1 world, many of which hint at possible release clauses in his contract.

When asked if he was aware of all the rumoured clauses that could allow him to leave Red Bull, he was clear: “I know exactly what is in my contract and what the options are. It is my duty to know. You should never sign something if you don’t know what it is…”

However, Verstappen remained tight-lipped about the nature of those options.

Focus on performance and team dynamics: Key to Verstappen’s future

For Verstappen, performance remains the top priority when it comes to his career choices.

“I want to be in a car where I can win races and championships,” he said. He also stressed the importance of team chemistry, adding, “But it also depends on the environment. If you can’t identify with the team and the people, it’s no fun”.

It’s a balanced approach that underlines Verstappen’s vision of a successful F1 career defined not just by the car, but by the culture and support network around him. His current loyalty to Red Bull speaks volumes about the environment the team has fostered, and one he has no desire to leave behind.

Red Bull’s inner tensions: A power struggle unfolds

Despite Verstappen’s clear allegiance to Red Bull Racing, the team itself has not been without its challenges. Earlier this year, a power struggle emerged between Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner and Verstappen’s long-time mentor Helmut Marko. Both Horner and Marko have played a pivotal role in Verstappen’s journey to world championship glory, with each wielding considerable influence over the direction of Red Bull Racing.

Verstappen expressed his deep appreciation for Marko’s influence on his career and reflected on their history.

“I owe a lot to Helmut. He entrusted me with a Formula 1 cockpit when I was a teenager. Over the years, we have built a deep relationship of trust and respect,” said Verstappen. This mentorship, which he described as akin to family, has been a fundamental aspect of Verstappen’s development as a driver.

Verstappen also acknowledged his loyalty to Horner.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” he admitted, highlighting the strong bond he has developed with the team and its iconic brand over the years.

F1 meets football: Verstappen hopes for Klopp visit to track

In a surprising twist, Verstappen touched on the connection between Red Bull’s F1 team and the world of football, particularly in light of the recent announcement that Juergen Klopp has joined Red Bull as Head of Football. Klopp, the celebrated former Liverpool manager and Bundesliga coach, will take on a new role that will further expand Red Bull’s influence in the sport.

For Verstappen, the announcement wasn’t exactly news. “I knew… for some time that there were talks,” he said. However, despite being aware of the developments, Verstappen has yet to make personal contact with Klopp.

“Maybe he’ll come to one of the races. Until then, I’ll follow what he does in his new role,” he said.

Red Bull’s move marks a strategic crossover between two of the world’s most popular sports and could open the door to new synergies between the F1 and football worlds under the Red Bull umbrella.

Verstappen’s vision: Prioritising performance and team loyalty

If Verstappen continues to lead in the 2024 season, his future at Red Bull looks more assured. With both the team and the driver aligned in their goals, the only remaining question is not if, but how far he will go with Red Bull.

Whether he will one day race under a different flag remains a matter of speculation, but for now Verstappen remains steadfast in his loyalty to Red Bull and focused on adding more championships to his already illustrious career. For that, Red Bull will need to step up.
