Adrian Newey chooses Aston Martin over Ferrari: Hamilton and Leclerc react – Adrian Newey, one of the most respected engineers in Formula One, has made headlines with his decision to join Aston Martin for next season, ending widespread speculation about his future.
Known for his technical brilliance and success at Red Bull Racing, Newey had been linked with a move to Ferrari. However, he has opted to work alongside Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin, leaving Ferrari fans and drivers to ponder what might have been. Despite Newey’s decision, both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have spoken out, showing no hard feelings about the move.

Newey chooses Aston Martin and Alonso over Ferrari
Newey, who took a brief sabbatical from the sport, had been courted by several teams, including Ferrari. With his technical acumen and vast experience, any team would consider Newey a significant asset, and Ferrari had high hopes of securing his services. The lure of working with the likes of Charles Leclerc and possibly Lewis Hamilton, who had also been linked with Ferrari, could have made the Scuderia a compelling choice.
However, Newey decided to return to F1 with Aston Martin. His long-standing admiration for Fernando Alonso was a key factor in his decision.
“After a few months off I decided I wanted to stay in F1 and yes, Ferrari was one of the considerations,” said Newey in an interview.
“I never hid the fact that I wanted to work with Fernando and with Lewis…”
The choice is a strategic one for Aston Martin, an up-and-coming team looking to break into the top echelons of Formula One. With Newey’s engineering expertise and Alonso’s driving skills, Aston Martin is positioning itself as a serious contender for the coming seasons.

Hamilton: No frustration at Newey’s decision
Lewis Hamilton, who has won multiple world championships with Mercedes, was quick to address the speculation surrounding Newey’s decision. Many had wondered if Hamilton, who was rumoured to be considering a move to Ferrari himself, was frustrated by the engineer’s decision to join Aston Martin instead. However, Hamilton was clear in his response, showing respect for Newey’s career and achievements.
“Adrian has such a history, such a track record, and he has done an extraordinary job throughout his career,” Hamilton told reporters.
“I think he would be an extraordinary addition to any team. Ferrari are already making huge strides and their car is faster this year. It would have been a privilege to work with him and he’s definitely on the list of people I would like to work with. But are you frustrated that he’s going to Aston Martin? Honestly, no…”
Hamilton expressed satisfaction with his career path, having won championships with two teams that did not have Newey on board.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with two championship teams without Adrian. I’m grateful for my journey,” concluded Hamilton.

Leclerc: “Not disappointed” by Newey’s decision
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also commented on Newey’s decision, making it clear that while the Scuderia had explored the possibility of signing him, there was no disappointment at the outcome. Leclerc praised the efforts of the current Ferrari team and expressed confidence in their ability to succeed without Newey’s input.
“Let’s say I’m not disappointed,” said Leclerc.
“I would be disappointed if we hadn’t tried or if we hadn’t talked to Adrian. We did. In the end, he made his decision and I respect that. At Ferrari we have always put the group before the individual.”
Leclerc went on to acknowledge Newey’s reputation, but emphasised the collective strength within the Ferrari team. “Adrian Newey is incredible for everything he’s achieved, but we have amazing individuals at Ferrari and I believe in our group. I have no doubt that we’ll have an extremely strong team in the future,” he added.

Ferrari’s future: Group over individual
Ferrari, one of the most storied teams in F1 history, has long been known for its collective approach to engineering and racing. Despite missing out on Newey, both Leclerc and the team remain optimistic about their prospects for the future. Ferrari has seen improvements in recent years and there is a belief within the team that their current structure, led by talented individuals, will eventually return them to the top of the sport.
“I wish Adrian the best, but I hope Ferrari comes out on top,” said Leclerc, summing up his feelings on the situation.
“Once again we have an exceptional group and I have no doubt that we’ll have an extremely strong team in the future. I am very happy with the structure we have.”

The road ahead
With Newey’s expertise now aligned with Aston Martin, the coming seasons promise to be an exciting chapter in Formula One. Backed by Newey’s technical mastery and Alonso’s experience, Aston Martin will look to challenge the dominance of the likes of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari.
Meanwhile, Ferrari will continue to rely on its collective strength, determined to return to the pinnacle of the sport without relying on any one individual.
For Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Newey’s decision represents the changing landscape of F1, but neither driver seems fazed. As next season approaches, all eyes will be on how Newey’s input will shape Aston Martin’s performance, and whether Ferrari’s group-oriented approach will be enough to re-establish their place as title contenders.
