Huge admission by Horner over Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton’s recent triumph at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone was a significant moment, not just for the passionate English fans, but for the entire Formula 1 community. Marking his first Grand Prix win since Saudi Arabia in 2021, Hamilton’s performance was particularly noteworthy.

One individual who has historically been critical of Hamilton, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, has now expressed admiration for the Mercedes driver.

Hamilton Reveals Great Self-Doubt

In the lead-up to this remarkable victory, Hamilton candidly revealed the immense self-doubt he had been grappling with since his last win.

“I mean, there were definitely days between 2021 and now where I didn’t feel like I was good enough anymore, or that I was going to get back to where I am today,” Hamilton admitted.

Despite these doubts, it was his former fiercest rival, Nico Rosberg, who surprisingly predicted Hamilton’s triumph. On Sky Sports, Rosberg confidently stated, “I’m betting on Lewis today. Because I think Mercedes looks really good, and I still remember his race pace here because I had to compete against it.”

Rosberg’s Faith and Hamilton’s Triumph

Rosberg’s prediction proved accurate as Hamilton celebrated his 104th Grand Prix victory, a record ninth at Silverstone. Post-race, Hamilton was visibly emotional, shedding tears of relief and joy.

“I can’t stop crying. I think you know, since 2021, I’ve been getting up every day, trying to fight, train, dedicate myself to the cause, and work as hard as I can with this incredible team,” Hamilton shared with former teammate Jenson Button during the top-three interviews.

Support from His ‘Inner Circle’

Hamilton’s journey back to the top was bolstered by the unwavering support of his team and his close-knit environment.

“The most important thing is that I had great people around me who supported me and my team. Whenever I see how much effort they put in, it encourages me to do the same,” he said. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, a long-time supporter and confidant, was acutely aware of Hamilton’s struggles.

“Our relationship goes back a long time and we have both suffered in different areas,” Wolff revealed.

“He was there for me. And in the recent past, I also tried to do my part when he had doubts.”

The Emotional Release

Hamilton described the race as the “most emotional end to a race that I have ever experienced,” revealing the depth of the relief and joy he felt crossing the finish line.

“When I crossed the finish line, something that I had been carrying inside me for far too long was released. It was the most emotional end to a race that I have ever experienced. I have never cried before,” he confessed.

Hamilton also reminisced about Rubens Barrichello, who famously cried on the podium after his first Grand Prix win in Hockenheim in 2000. Hamilton admitted he sometimes wondered why he had never had such an emotional reaction, but after the challenging 2021 season and the long road back to victory, he understood the depth of emotion Barrichello felt.

“Sometimes I didn’t want to go on,” Hamilton admitted, but his perseverance was finally rewarded with one of the most meaningful victories of his career.

“Getting up again, trying, doing it today, winning again… that’s the greatest feeling I can remember.”

Horner Admits: A Victory Worth Celebrating

In his post-race statement, Christian Horner was unequivocal in his praise for Hamilton.

“I thought Lewis drove a very good race. He is a deserving winner,” Horner remarked. The victory at Silverstone was not just another win; it was Hamilton’s ninth triumph at this historic circuit, an extraordinary achievement that Horner acknowledged as an “extremely emotional thing” for Hamilton and his team.

Horner continued, “He can be very proud of that. And we take our hats off to him and his performance.” Such words of respect and admiration from Horner signal a significant shift in the relationship between the two, given their contentious past.

The 2021 season was marked by intense rivalry and acrimony between Hamilton and Horner, particularly following the infamous incident at Silverstone where Hamilton collided with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, sending the latter to the hospital. At the time, Horner had accused Hamilton of a “pretty amateurish mistake” and was critical of the leniency of the punishment handed to the Mercedes driver.

However, Horner’s recent comments reflect a more conciliatory tone. This evolution in their relationship underscores the dynamic nature of sportsmanship in Formula 1, where fierce competition often gives way to mutual respect.

A Thriving Formula 1 Landscape

Horner also highlighted the current state of Formula 1, expressing optimism about the sport’s competitive landscape. “Formula 1 couldn’t be doing any better at the moment,” he said, noting the fierce competition among Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes.

The diversity in potential race winners has invigorated the sport, drawing unprecedented crowds to the race tracks. Silverstone itself saw 480,000 fans in attendance, matching last year’s record for the best-attended weekend in Formula 1 history.

Verstappen’s Consistency Stands Out

Despite the unpredictability of race outcomes, Horner emphasized the consistent performance of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. “Only Max has been consistent so far,” Horner stated. A glance at the World Championship standings post-Silverstone confirms this, with Verstappen amassing 61 points from a series of strong finishes, including a Grand Prix win and a sprint win.

Hamilton, with a Grand Prix victory and consistent placements, follows closely with 55 points, indicating a potential resurgence for Mercedes as the season progresses.

The question on everyone’s mind is whether Mercedes and Hamilton pose a significant threat to Red Bull’s dominance in the latter half of the 2024 season. Horner acknowledges the challenge, stating, “Even if we are currently in front, there is still something that can be improved. And if the gap continues to close, small details can make the difference.”

Horner pointed out the impact of variable weather conditions on race outcomes. The mixed conditions at Silverstone, favouring Hamilton and the Mercedes team, exemplify how unpredictable elements can influence results.

“The Mercedes has always been stronger in cooler conditions,” Horner explained, noting Hamilton’s ability to capitalize on the rain-affected race.

Strategic Nuances and Future Battles

Horner detailed how changing weather conditions played a crucial role in the Silverstone race.

“In mixed weather, you actually think that Max will gain ground, but he was having a few difficulties at that point. His pace only came back when the track dried out again,” Horner elaborated. Verstappen’s late surge in pace was impressive, but ultimately, it was not enough to challenge Hamilton’s lead, illustrating the finely balanced competition at the top tier of Formula 1.

As the 2024 season unfolds, the evolving dynamics between teams and drivers, coupled with the ever-present element of unpredictability, promise an exciting and fiercely contested championship battle.  It certainly has been a remarkable season thus far.
