At the end of the first half of the F1 season, Lewis Hamilton won his fifth consecutive podium, finishing the Hungarian Grand Prix in second place, his best position this year. The seven-time world champion’s goal is to win in the second half of the season and he reveals his chances of a win for the remainder of the year.
It is fair to say that Mercedes has had a difficult start to the 2022 season, not least because of the problems with the tyres, but also extreme porpoising (bouncing). But the team has made significant progress over the last few races, more specifically since the introduction of a new package on the W13 at Silverstone.
Although he has not yet managed to reach the top step of the podium this season, Lewis Hamilton nevertheless considers that he has a chance of winning soon.
“I really believe that [we can win]. Of course we’ve improved, we’ve been more consistent in the last few races and the team has progressed well,
“Everyone is involved to move forward. The car is more and more a race car, which it wasn’t at the beginning of the year. We’re getting back to normal racing conditions, which is positive.”
“The last race was the best performance we’ve been able to get so far,” said Lewis Hamilton.
“It’s a good boost for us to know that we can close the gap. Of course it won’t be easy, we’ll keep our heads down. The other guys are doing an incredible job, but I think we can close that gap.”
Going into this 14th round of the year, Lewis Hamilton sits sixth in the drivers’ world championship with 146 points scored so far this season; he trails Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz by 10 points.
