Verstappen talks of ‘advanced Honda engine’ coming

Jos Verstappen hopes that the advanced Honda engine that will be fitted in the back of his son’s Red Bull next year will allow him to finally beat the Mercedes in 2021.

Jos Verstappen, the father of Max Verstappen, expressed his frustration about the bad luck of the Red Bull driver this season, with a fourth retirement last Sunday in Imola.

Following a sudden puncture, Max Verstappen finished his race in the gravel trap at Imola for what was his third retirement of the season on Italian soil (Monza, Mugello, and Imola).

“Of course it sucks, it isn’t something you expect. ” said Jos Verstappen to Ziggo Sport.

“You know that it can always happen and fortunately it happened in a good place where he didn’t touch anything. If it had happened four turns Later on, it could have been very different. ”

Jos Verstappen went on to describe his son’s 2020 Formula 1 campaign as “a great success”, but equally describing it as ” difficult “, since he has suffered four retirements so far. However, the former F1 driver is optimistic about the future and hopes that the package Red Bull-Honda 2021 will allow his son to fight against Mercedes. Indeed the Dutchman alludes to a developed and advanced PU for next year.

“Of course, there are new opportunities for next year. We really need to improve the car, but also the engine.

“I know that there will be a new Honda engine for next year, it will certainly be better than what we have at the moment.

“So, in this area, this seems positive, but yes, the others are not standing still either, we know that, so we are still waiting to see the new car. ”

In 2021, Honda will have its last season in Formula 1 as as an engine manufacturer, the Japanese firm having decided to stop its programme in Formula 1 championship at the end of next season.
