Red Bull’s Helmut Marko’s opinion on the Vettel versus Leclerc ‘incident’

After the collision between Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc at the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2019, the Ferrari line-up was questioned several times.

Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko believes that the answer is boring: Ferrari will continue to come up with Leclerc and Vettel in 2020. Marko helped Sebastian Vettel to develop as a driver and celebrated the Red Bull team’s greatest successes together with him. He knows what’s going on at Vettel.

“Vettel still has a contract for 2020. I assume that this contract will be fulfilled,” he says on ServusTV in Austria.

Vettel’s change had been speculated about, even a career end was discussed. At least the 32-year-old has decisively rejected the latter as reported by TJ13 earlier this week.

However, Marko still sees him firmly in the cockpit for Ferrari. He also thinks that the incident should not be over analysed.

“I looked at the replay, that was just a very minimal touch, unfortunately with catastrophic or immense consequences”.

“That the suspension breaks with such a light touch is not the normal case. And that it also causes a puncture … A lot has come together,” Marko continues.

“There have certainly already been worse situations, even with us”. with obvious reference to the incident between Vettel and Webber during their Red Bull days, specifically the collision in 2010.

Red Bull experienced Vettel’s departure at first hand: For the 2015 Formula 1 season the German has switched to Ferrari, where he still drives today. There is still suspicion that Vettel wanted to avoid the teammate battle with the very strong Daniel Ricciardo from 2014. It’s fair to say that now he faces an even tougher confrontation with Charles Leclerc.
