The #F1 Bar Exam: 14 November 2013

Welcome to another week of TheJudge13 #F1 Bar Exam.

Last week’s question(s): Can you name the driver in the photo. What year did he make his Formula 1 debut and in which lower formulae did he share a joint position with another Formula 1 driver? There is also some history between these two drivers, both on and off the track, not necessarily Formula 1, what is it?

The answer(s) I was looking for were: The driver in the photo is Heinz-Harald Frentzen racing in his last season in Formula 1. The photo was taken at the 2003 Australian Grand Prix where he finished 6th after qualifying 4th.

Frentzen made his Formula 1 debut in 1994 for Sauber as well and impressed Sir Frank Williams so much that he offered him a seat after Senna’s death however he chose to remain loyal to Sauber. His performances helped to maintain the team’s momentum after Karl Wendlinger was seriously injured at Monaco.

In 1989 Frentzen competed in the German Formula 3 championship against none other than Michael Schumacher. At the time, there was a big push by Bernie Ecclestone to have a German driver in the Formula One World Championship, so the ONS (the German National Motorsports committee) decided to support both Frentzen and Schumacher. The ONS put up the reward of a Formula One test to the driver who first would take a victory in a Formula 3 race. This ultimately ended up being Schumacher, in a controversial race at Zeltweg, Austria in which Frentzen claimed Schumacher had forced him off the track. However, Schumacher did not get the Formula One test drive anyway; Karl Wendlinger won the German Formula 3 Championship and Frentzen became joint runner-up with Schumacher (the two finishing on identical points totals).

The controversy did not end there however. A very competitive Schumacher not only forced Frentzen off the track but also met his wife Corinna through Frentzen, who was Corinna’s boyfriend at the time. When that relationship came to an end, Michael seized his opportunity and five years later he and Corinna were married in August 1995.

Well done to Mike, Prashanth, Henrik, Vortex Motio, Bender, Taflach, Auq, Jim and Tim.

This week’s question(s):  Can you name the driver in the photo, the team he raced for and who was his team mate for the season. Also, why did his previous teammate lose his race seat?
