Ferrari chief admits: Hamilton seeks drive, & date of driver announcements

For Louis Camilleri, the CEO of Ferrari, it is his understanding that it was Lewis Hamilton who is interested in Ferrari and not the other way around.

Louis Camilleri, current CEO of Ferrari, has cut short the current rumours that Lewis Hamilton would be going to Ferrari in 2021 as a ‘definite’.

He said that his meeting with the six-time world champion was exaggerated and had absolutely nothing to do with an eventual transfer of the British driver to his team. The meeting with Lewis was exaggerated by the press and that they met because Lewis and John (Elkann) have friends in common.

“We have the advantage of being very popular with drivers. We are in a privileged situation.”

“Of course, we are obviously very flattered that Lewis is interested in our team,

“but we already have a long-term agreement with one of our drivers (Charles Leclerc) and we will discuss the contract for our other driver next season.

“I think that our decision about the composition of our drivers for 2021 will be taken at the beginning of May 2020, around the Spanish Grand Prix.” concludes the Ferrari chief.

2014 Spanish Podium - Lewis Hamilton and Eddie Jordan

There are several ‘paddock insiders’ who still stand by their prediction that Hamilton will be at Ferrari come 2021. TJ13 reported this back in the summer when the infamous ‘blabber of rumoured news’ Eddie Jordan claimed three things.

Firstly, McLaren would be using Mercedes power. Second, Verstappen would drive for Mercedes and lastly Hamilton would move to Ferrari. To be fair to EJ, the first one has certainly come to fruition.

Jordan yesterday was quoted as saying in the BBC Top Gear magazine that he stands by the Hamilton to Ferrari move.

“It would be the right time for Lewis to go to Ferrari [in 2021],” says Jordan.

“He’s coming to the end of his career, but he still wants to win his seven or more titles.

“But the real belief that I think Lewis will go to Ferrari in 2021 is that Toto Wolff’s contract expires at the end of next year.

“He knows Mercedes’ long-term future in Formula 1 is not a certainty. Indeed, Lewis has mentioned Toto’s contract on more than one occasion, which is unusual for an F1 driver to do.

“Lewis would only go to Ferrari if someone could protect him against any possibility that Charles Leclerc could usurp him. So Ferrari would bring Toto along too.

“I’m absolutely certain that in 2021, Lewis Hamilton will move to Ferrari. Toto goes with him, because as I said, Lewis won’t leave himself exposed, and it will be his way of bringing an equaliser. Do Ferrari need two number ones? No, but they won’t let go of Leclerc.” concludes Jordan.
