#TechF1 Treasures- The #F1 Race Weekend in Official FIA Documents #GermanGP

Brought to you by TheJudge13 contributor Mattpt55 – the best in Scrutineering, Stewards’ Decisions, and other assorted FIA documents looked at slightly irreverently

There’s the race we see on telly, and then there’s the race behind the scenes. One rarely talked about by reporters but told in part by the official FIA documents. Here is a selection of this weekend’s documents for you to peruse at your leisure. Enjoy. Wonder where all this great stuff came from? Right Here

From the Dept of Compact Comestibles

1FunFacts

That’s a lot of beer and sausage. Better call a cardiologist. Thank God they don’t do that for COTA……. oh, wait a minute

From the Dept of Things We Need to Know

AThursEventDrainage

They improved the drainage at Silverstone too. Too bad they didn’t fix the ditches.

From the Dept of Better Call the Internet Police

AThursHacked

They really did call the internet police. Who Knew? At least the circuit agreed to pay for it so FOM didn’t have to.

From the Dept of Counting all the Things

AThursPUCount

Hmm… Daniil looks likely to take top honours. Vettel is trying hard though.

From the Dept of New Things to Replace

AThursTechMGUNew1

AThursTechMGUNew2

So that would be *every* Mercedes ICE currently in use. Curious Indeed.

From the Dept of Rules You Didn’t Know

AThursTechRegs1

Follow the Bouncing Regulation

AThursTechRegsAp2

From the Dept of Excessive Thoroughness

AThursTechRegs2

Even Google Translate couldn’t figure that out

From the Dept of FRIC’ ing Information

ThursTechFRICingGears

For information purposes, it’s not technically illegal to run that suspension.

From the Dept of Job Insecurity

AThursPresserJobInsecurity

Way to throw your teammate under the bus. Lewis could’ve learned a trick or two from you.

From the Dept of Few Words

AThursPresserManOfFewWords

“I crashed.” Hemingway-esque

From the Dept of Epic Understatement

AThursPresserMasterOf Understatement

I think he’s been taking lessons from Kimi

From the Dept of Foolish Consistency

AThursPresserLucky13

There’s no real way to make that look good.

From the Dept of Handbags

AThursPresserTelltheTruth

I thought that’s what it sounded like.

From the Dept of Controversial Controversies

AThursPresserDiffOfOpinion

Quick, someone start ginning up the controversy machine. Gotta sell some eyeballs. Points for the best faux headline

Dept of It Was Just a Joke

AThursPresserGermanOrNot

So it was just a joke then. Meaning it will be written about the entire rest of the season.

From the Dept of Close Calls

BFriTechNewThings

The race for first grid spot penalty is more compelling than the race for WDC LOL..

From the Dept of Cold Comfort

BFriNewTechThingsESCE

At least he’s beating his team mate in one category

From the Dept of Colder Comfort

BFriNewTechThingsCE

Losing to Kamui though. And that’s before he barbecued his car.

From the Dept of Free Energy

BFriNewTechThingsMGU

Also in the running for first grid spot penalty. It’s a nail biter all right.

From the Dept of Complicated Words

BFriTechNewGearbox

That means new gear ratios. I ran it through Google Translate.

From the Dept of Newly Naughty

BFriNaughtyStepSWSpeeding

Wonder if they billed Toto for that?

From the Dept of Recalcitrance

BFriNaughtyStepSWSpeeding2

Literally 2 minutes later than the first one.

From the Dept of Foreshadowing

BFriPresserLuckyCyril

Not just the engine, huh? Former team principal, huh? Ok then, nothing to see here.

From the Dept of Into the Fire

BFriPresserUnluckyChristjian

I think if you listen carefully you can hear Cyril’s repressed laughter through his entire answer.

From the Dept of Dieter asks Good Questions

BFriPresserDieterAttendance

I’d rather think you’d need to *do* something about it.

From the Dept of FRIC-ey Questions

BFriPresserFRIC

So more tyre degradation, no real change and lots of money to switch up the suspension. Brilliant!

From the Dept of More Shiny New Things

CSatTechESMGU

Not that it helped them much in Quali

From the Dept of Follow the Leader

CSatTechES2

He didn’t really need a new one, he just wanted to hang with the Kewl Kidz.

From the Dept of Oh By the Way

CSatTechSoftwareCoverandSeal

So Mercedes gets 2 and everyone else gets one. That seems fair. And oooohhhhhh!!! Caterham’s in trouble.

From the Dept of Sat on the Naughty Step

CSatNaughtyCaterham

Caterham *totally* got away with that.

From the Dept of Shadenfreude

CSatPresserLaVie

Well said, Nico. Now tell us what you really think..

From the Dept of Good Questions

CSatPresserBrakes

Good answer too. Now we know why Lewis ran the Brembo.

From the Dept of Disagreement

CSatPresserWilliams

Perhaps you should watch the cars and not just the laptimes. 😉

From the Dept of Broken Things

DSunTech

Well, let’s see what the stewards said

DSunNaughty

5 grid spot it is. Now to see if they give him new brakes

  1. Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!!!

Beautifully measured drive by Nico. Perfect execution. 😀

Those who (stupidly) wondered after GB, “it will be interesting to see how will Nico cope with his first hardship”, well they now know. Like I said then, he built a lead before, he’ll do it again. Question answered, in the best possible way, pole / win. I wonder what the dismissive excuse of this will be? Was that a good “hardship response?” Lol 😉

Over the break, hopefully Hamilton keeps listening to people (yes men) about him having had no impact on his brake reliability over the races, and it’s all bad luck, and keeps throwing quali after quali down the toilet ala Webber and his clutches and career long bad starts.

  2. Have not watched the race yet here in Michigan, primarily because i was asleep. When i do later this afternoon i’ll cast my vote for Driver of the Weekend. Interesting to read that Hamilton drove to 3rd place from his starting position, particularly at Hockenheim.

Anyway i’m commenting today just to say this post is the reason i read here everyday, thank you for compiling these official race documents. Really fun reading for me, thanx.

  3. Thanks, I still remember the first time I stumbled onto the FIA site and found these documents. I couldn’t believe they were just sitting there doing nothing so I decided to turn them into feature and share them. I’m still baffled they don’t get more coverage. So much great stuff.

    • “I’m still baffled they don’t get more coverage. So much great stuff.”

It’s because it takes actual work to sort through it all. It takes original thought to spot what you do. The normal F1 journo’s are cutting and pasting, keeping up with the latest bullshit. That’s why it hasn’t been utilised properly.

  4. What I’d like to see is info after the race on the following (all of which had been checked, but info never disclosed):
    Weight of each car
    Weight of each driver
    The tire pressure
The limits for electrical power and state of charge for the MGU-K and ES
    The maximum MGU-K torque
    The maximum MGU-H speed
    The fuel pressure
    The fuel flow
The fuel consumption (total for each car per race)
    The fuel temperature
I know that many won’t be interested in this info, but I find it quite the opposite. 🙂
