Retirement: Hamilton names successor at Mercedes

As potential Formula 1 retirement looms, Lewis Hamilton names his successor at Mercedes. Although the 2022 F1 season has not been a very successful one for Lewis Hamilton, it has nevertheless allowed George Russell to reveal his true worth. The young British driver, the seven-time world champion’s new team-mate, is an impressive fifth in the overall standings. In fact, Lewis Hamilton believes that his compatriot has the qualities required to succeed him at Mercedes.

The transition to the new regulations has been a difficult one for Mercedes this season. The team has experienced some problems with the development of its car and has had to struggle with one particularly significant problem. Toto Wolff’s team was struggling to suppress the porpoising of its car. While waiting for the violent car bouncing to be solved, Lewis Hamilton had a difficult time on the Formula 1 track.

With a car that was significantly less efficient than the Ferraris and Red Bulls, the British driver quickly found himself out of the running for the title. However, things were visibly different for George Russell. The 24-year-old, who had just arrived to replace Valtteri Bottas, found himself in the top five of the overall standings, despite being used to the back of the grid with Williams. With his qualities, George Russell certainly has a bright future ahead of him. In fact, Lewis Hamilton was quick to praise him.

“I wouldn’t say it’s been difficult [being Russell’s teammate]; it’s been fun, we’ve worked together incredibly well. George has been super positive… has had a positive impact on the working environment. Overall, he’s been a real pleasure to work with and it’s great to see his success,

“He’s done such a good job, got good points for the team and he’s going to keep getting better, he’s going to keep getting better for a long time,” he said in comments written on the official Formula One website.

Lewis Hamilton even believes that George Russell could be in a position to take over at Mercedes when he retires, as he is already 37 years old: “I definitely see a lot of potential in him [to be world champion] and he’s in the right place for that. I really think that… whether I’m here or not, he has all the qualities to help take this team forward into the future and lead it to success, so I think it’s the right choice for the team. Hopefully I can contribute a little bit to help him progress.”

However, George Russell prefers not to get carried away and keep his feet on the ground as he explained in a recent episode of the Beyond The Grid podcast:

“I like to look at things a bit more objectively. Things can change very quickly in Formula One and signing a piece of paper to join the biggest team of this era, without a doubt, is obviously a huge moment,

But if I don’t perform well, if I get my ass kicked by the greatest driver of all time, what does that mean? Because in a year’s time I’ll probably be out the door. It was a big step on my ladder, but it’s a bit like the image of the guy climbing the mountain – he thinks he’s at the top and he looks up and the peak is miles away, and you get there and there’s another peak, and that’s kind of the way I see it. There’s a lot to celebrate for a moment like that,

“I want to be world champion, I want to win races, and signing that contract didn’t guarantee anything.”

  1. So is Lewis is having problems with a poor performing Benz,Max and the Ferrari Boys or is Lewis just plain mentally and physically worn out? What ever it is Lewis has put on a great show over the years. I thinl he should go enjoy his life outside of F1. He has nothing else to prove in F1.

    • Lewis put on a great show???? From what world are you coming? 7 years of the most boring races ever. One dominating car and one man that had nothing else to do than finish his 50 plus laps and walk to the podium. My grandmother would’ve become 7 times wcc. The only fun was watching who came in third.

      • Lewis can’t help it if his supreme skills as a racing driver makes it look easy 😉

      • 😂 you mad huh!
Well He’s the GOAT deal with it, and don’t involve your granny into this, she likes Lewis.

        • LH is certainly a driver who is exceptionally good. but to call him the GOAT is too much for me.

achieving 7 titles alone is not enough for this. It makes him exceptional. But it is also about the overall picture. Had he won those 7 titles the way he did last year, with a battle to the last round. or at least a title or 4 where this was the case.

          But that’s my opinion

          • 5 of his 6 with Mercedes went to 2 rounds from the end or less… thats pretty tight by my book

Not to mention 2007 was lost at the last round, and 2008 was won at the last corner

          • Haha I wondered how long it would take before you’d show you’re hatred of Lewis. You can deny hating him like you always do but everyone here knows the truth 😉
Oh and you’re English is terrible by the way

  2. So where’s the new improvement to the Mercedes car? Let’s see where development takes us before we completely write off lewis Hamilton this season.

    • Correct. Provided that you replace ‘Lewis Hamilton’ with ‘Mercedes’ in your comment.

  3. What gives Hamilton the right to choose who his successor should be . Hopefully he doesn’t recommend another driver with his arrogance.

    • Ok

Sitting here reading some of the comments I’m wondering what Lewis has to do to please some people a seven time world champ and one of the best ambassadors for the sport we have had am pretty sure he wasn’t knighted for his singing and max and co should wind there necks in until they have legitimately won say maybe four or so world titles and show respect where it’s due end of rant ha ha

      • Ambassador? Please enlighten me, what exactly did LH do for the sport than? He only uses it as a vehicle for is own worldview and to feed his ego and perceived moral superiority. Oh and Saying that the local fans are the best… at every circuit… 🤮.

        • Have you trolls nothing better to do than talk utter rubbish and be hateful for no reason. The only thing that stands out about your ridiculous comments is a clear demonstration of what a horrible bully you are. That’s right, people who spread hate for no reason are either jealous or just plain nasty and where your concerned it’s most likely both. Lewis has more decency in his little finger than you will ever have so congratulations on making a total fool of yourself

        • Why even bother reading posts about Lewis if you hate him so much? What has he done for the sport you ask? He has been a perfect example of how to be a decent human being, something you know nothing about. He achieved his dream of being a Formula 1 world champion with hard work and dedication and has inspired thousands of young people and kids who want to follow their dreams whether it be in racing or something else. Who have you inspired?

          • Let’s agree to disagree about ‘being an ‘example’ and ‘inspiring’. But surely both have no specific relation with the F1 as a sport as was suggested. So my point made before, stands firmly.

          • Duckey my dear, if you are looking for evidence of what LH has “done for the sport” aside from inspiring youngsters in both acheivemnt and conduct, I would suggest you look down to comments from “Skid” a fellow LH hater

    • Look who’s talking you’re arrogance and lack of respect is so blatant it stinks

    • Wow! Don’t be mad now hush!
It won’t be alright for you as long as Lewis is the GOAT!!

    • Lewis hasn’t “chosen” anyone it’s just the title of this thread was badly worded by the mighty judge. Lewis merely stated that he believed George had the skill, desire and dedication to succeed him at Mercedes 😉
