Volkswagen confirms that Audi and Porsche will enter Formula 1 in the next few years after VW Group chairman Herbert Diess has confirmed that Audi and Porsche will be joining F1 in the next few years.

Diess said that Porsche has already taken very concrete steps to participate in the championship without providing further details but it is believed that Red Bull Racing powertrains will pair up with the Porsche to provide an engine for Max Verstappen.

TJ13 had reported on this some time ago in January, but yesterday Reuters confirmed the entry of the car manufacturer with some further details.

It has long been known that the arrival of Audi and Porsche in Formula 1 is directly linked to the new engine regulations, which are due to come into force in 2026, indeed F1 has tailored the regulations to entice the car giant into the sport.

Indeed F1 boss Stefano Domenicali, a former boss of VAG brand Lamborgini, had revealed he expected a decision to be made very soon saying:

“I think we have an important month ahead of us [Feburary] regarding the decision of the Volkswagen Group. Getting involved would be great, but I can’t speak on behalf of VW. I was part of this incredible group for a few years and I know how hard they are working on the future,”

According to several rumours and unlike Porsche, it is possible that Audi will not limit itself to a simple role as a powertrain supplier with a possible takeover of McLaren or Alfa Romeo (Sauber) possibility, therefore allowing the German firm to compete as a factory team.

According to Reuters yesterday, the current bid for McLaren is 500 million Euros.
