Nico Rosberg has been in the press lately and has plenty to say about Formula One, Formula E and the two main protagonists for the F1 World Drivers Title.

The German F1 champion is still employed by Mercedes Benz, enjoying family life since the shock retirement late last year but has not disappeared from the paddock with multiple appearances at various Grand Prix.

During the buildup to Spa this weekend, he was asked about Hamilton and Vettel’s chances by the German media.

“I still believe that Lewis and Valtteri have a trump card because they have the better car in the long run. But Ferrari has always fought back – as in Hungary. That’s why the Scuderia cannot be discounted”

With only 14 points separating Lewis to the championship leader Vettel, there’s plenty to play for and Mercedes are expected to mount a serious charge with the high speed Spa and Monza rounds coming up.

“Both have small weaknesses,” Rosberg said. “Sebastian’s strength also is his weakness, as we saw in Baku, [Vettel] is convinced that he is always right.”

Of course Rosberg refers to the ding dong between Lewis and the Ferrari driver. Despite the unacceptable behaviour of slamming into the Mercedes of Hamilton when Sebastian believed Lewis brake tested him. Some have argued that Lewis’s driving was on the erratic side but regardless, Sebastian was lucky to get away with such a light penalty for his retaliatory move.

“Lewis, on the other hand, has a bit of inconsistency. Sometimes he comes to the track, and isn’t 100% fit in the head.”

With regard to his future, current champion and Mercedes ambassador Rosberg hints at a return to racing saying “Racing will always be fun to me, so let’s see what happens.” so there is a possibility of the current F1 champion trying his arm at the burgeoning electric series with several ex F1 drivers having raced. This includes current champion Lucas di Grassi who raced for Virgin Racing in the 2010, former Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Buemi is a 12-time race winner in Formula E whilst Jean-Eric Vergne, Nick Heidfeld and Nelson Piquet Jr are all part of the grid.

“This is the future of the world and it will be exciting to see when all those manufacturers put their cards on the table,” Rosberg added.

Mercedes announced last month that they would be joining Formula E for its sixth series which will get underway in 2019 where they will join fellow manufacturers BMW and Porsche.

“In motorsport, like in every other area, we want to be the benchmark in the premium segment and also explore innovative new projects,” Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said.

“With Formula 1 and Formula E, we have achieved exactly this balance.

“Electrification is happening in the road car world and Formula E offers manufacturers an interesting platform to bring this technology to a new audience.”
