The #F1 Bar Exam: 30 January 2014

In the middle of the first F1 test of the season, something to make you ponder the past.

Last week’s question(s): Can you name the two drivers and their teams in the picture. Can you also name the race, who won it and what impact financial trouble for teams had during this race?

The answer(s) I was looking for were: The two drivers in the picture is Gianni Morbidelli, driving a Minardi-Lamborghini, and Emanuele Naspetti, driving a March-Ilmor during the 1992 Portuguese Grand Prix held at Autódromo do Estoril on September 27. The race was won by Nigel Mansell from pole with McLaren drivers Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna finishing second and third.

However, before the race, financially troubled Fondmetal team pulled out of the sport, the third team to do so this season after Brabham and Andrea Moda. That meant that there were only 26 cars on the entry list, and hence this Grand Prix was the first since 1987 in which all cars automatically qualified for the race, regardless of qualifying lap times.

Well done to Cassius, Taflach, Tony, Johnny, Sid, Peevee, Stephen, Philip, Mike, Kyriakos, the13thduke, Av2290, Frans, and Tim.

This week’s question(s): Can you name the driver in the photo and the team. Where did he make his F1 debut and for what reason is the driver remembered the most?
