The #F1 Bar Exam: 02 January 2014

Welcome to the first Bar Exam of 2014!

Last week’s question(s): Can you name the two drivers, the team and constructor in the photo. Can you also name model of the cars in the photo and how many points was scored by the car in the first year it was raced?

The answer(s) I was looking for were: The two drivers in the photo was Michele Alboreto and Philippe Alliot. The team they raced for was the Larrousse-Calmels founded by Gérard Larrousse and Didier Calmels.

The cars in the photo are the Lola LC89 – Lamborghini V12. The LC89, with its Lamborghini V12 engine, made its debut in Round 3 at the 1989 Monaco Grand Prix. Unfortunately, while the aerodynamics were good and the chassis was on the pace, the Lamborghini V12 engine, considered by many in F1 to be the best sounding engine of the new non-turbo era, proved to be generally unreliable, despite its reported 625 bhp (466 kW; 634 PS).

The car and engine combination would only score 1 point in its racing life with Alliot finishing in 6th place at the 1989 Spanish Grand Prix. Indeed, five time Grand Prix winner Alboreto failed to pre-qualify the car twice (Spain and Australia) in his eight drives for the team in 1989.

Below is a video of the 1990 Lamborghini, if anyone can get a link of the 1989 one please post a link.

Well done to The13thDuke, Jim, JDanek007, Joe and Taflach!

This week’s question(s): Can you name the driver in the photo, the team and the year in which the photo was taken? The car also had a key new development that the team was hoping would give them ‘magic ingredient’ to have a successful campaign, what was it?
