Welcome to another edition of TheJudge13 F1 Bar Exam.

John is still caught up in other work, so you’ll have to make do with the Fat Hippo again this week.

Last week’s question(s): Which team ran a car that looked like that: (picture of a walrus)? When and how long did they run it, with which drivers and who came up with the idea?

The car in question was the BMW powered ‘walrus nose’ Williams FW26 of the 2004 season. The design team was headed by Patrick Head, Oliver Gavin and Antonia Terzi, the head aerodynamicist at the time. Terzi, who had been poached from Ferrari in 2002 came up with the ungainly design to optimize airflow under the car.

In addition to being terribly ugly, the solution was also not very effective. Despite good times set in pre-season testing, the car was hopelessly outpaced by the dominant Ferraris, Renaults and even the BARs. The teams drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher more often than not found themselves battling in the upper midfield rather than the business end of the pack.

For the Hungarian Grandprix the team gave up on the hideous nose and returned to a more conventional looking design, which turned the teams fortunes around considerably. Terzi resigned at the end of the 2004 season.

I initially thought I had made it too easy, but surprisingly few people got all details right. But some did. Congratulations to Oliver Wells, Cassius42, The13thDuke and Alex. It could have been more.
