FIA to introduce new directive in Belgium that Ferrari will fight

Should the FIA get serious with its plans to further regulate Formula 1’s floors for 2023, Ferrari intends to fight back, according to team boss Mattia Binotto.

Even though all teams seem to have the notorious “porpoising” under control, the FIA, driven by Mercedes and Aston Martin, will implement a new technical directive as early as Belgium.

For next season, the FIA wants to force teams to raise the edges of the underbodies and the diffuser channel. But Ferrari boss Binotto sees “no reason why we should make changes for safety reasons. If you look at the past races, I don’t see a safety problem.”

“If the FIA were to change the aero rules for 2023, it would be very bad at this point of the year, because there is too little time to change a concept, and that would be totally unfair again!”

Therefore, the Italian announces that if the FIA “really do this, we will try to understand how to stop them. Because we just don’t agree with them.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem had recently announced on Twitter that the revised Technical Regulations for 2023 had already been sent to the World Motor Sport Council for approval.

“After discussing the issue of porpoising with the 20 Formula One drivers and 10 team bosses, I am pleased to confirm that this week we will submit the updated 2023 technical regulations to the WMSC to address this issue, in addition to the measures already taken for the remainder of this season,” said Mohammed Ben Sulayem on Monday.

The 2023 technical regulations, several decisions have been taken to reduce the rigidity of the floor and the vertical movements of the cars:

  • Raising the edges of the floor by 25 mm
  • Raising the diffuser groove under the floor
  • Introduction of more stringent floorboard lateral flexibility tests
  • Introduction of a more accurate sensor to measure aerodynamic oscillation

It is now up to the World Motor Sport Council to validate the 2023 technical regulations.

  1. Here again FIA proves that they are controlled by Mercedes. When Mercedes complained about Massi, they fired him. And still haven’t recovered from him leaving. When Mercedes complained about the raising the floor, they comply. None of the other F1 teams complained. Makes you think… who controls The FIA

    • This is the same FIA whom is Mecs picked that changed the rear floor of 2021 cars so it suits high rake setup such as RB and hinders lower rake cars such as Merc.

So ur logic doesnt add up,

These changed are made on the grounds of driver safety not the whim of the Merc. Go push that agenda else where

      • You go push your agenda elsewhere. The only person I have ever heard complain of backache was Hamilton, on one occasion.
If you think that wasn’t suggested by Toto Wolff I would laugh.
It’s absolutely blatantly obvious that Mercedes’ are pushing this agenda. They don’t like to lose races let alone championships.
        How many races are left?
So if reliability isn’t a problem, as it is for Ferrari and RedBull they could still win the championship.
That’s exaywhy they want the rule change from Spa.

        • Just on the health and safety side of dealing with porpoising in some way the drivers that have publicly said they supported doing something includes:

          – Hamilton
          – Russell
          – Ricardo
          – Sainz
          – Gasly
          – Magnussen
          – Schumacher
          – Tsunoda
          – Ocon

There were also a couple of FIA contracted doctors.

Granted you could argue at the time the drivers pushed the fia to do something (after Azerbaijan?) these were mostly the slowest of their team/on the grid. Though that could mean that the fastest don’t want to rock the boat so deny it, or the slowest want to try and level the playing field.

Just being objective. I don’t really support a driver or team – could argue I’m the worst/best type of viewer I watch it for the drama and excitement. A good overtake / canny tactic is where I get my entertainment

      • If somebody thinks that this doesn’t favore merc, he must be stupid or practicing that. And this debils from merc, c’mon guys, please leave F1, i can’t stand you anymore. And some idiots here who sad that Ferrari has something over FIA in past years, what to say about them?? Sad. They can’t even reach the podium you morons.

    • They didn’t complain to have the floor height raided. The thing with Massi was that he had spent most of the race being told what to think and do by red bull all through the race in Abu Dhabi..

  2. I agree totally with you Nanda. It appears Mercedes has more influence over the FIA than necessary. Firing Massi was also a BIG F..K up. But who are the supporters to argue the point, only one of the people thatbALSO BRING IN A SUM OF MONEY.

    • Eric your as daft as Nanda, it was the control over Massi that red bull used to work things in Max’s favour. So I think you will find .Massi losing his job was down to RB bullying all through the race.

      • It wasn’t just RedBull, Toto had been screaming at him all season as well. Don’t forget that Lewis cut the track massively on the 1st lap and wasn’t penalized for it. Imo the decision at the end was the right one, only thing he could have done different was to do it a lap earlier

    • What short memories you have, only a few seasons ago people were saying that Ferrari had the FIA in the palm of their hand. You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. If the FIA had allowed side skirts, porpoising would not have been a problem, but excessive speed would!

  3. Just one point, MASI shouldn’t have been fired? That’s your point of view of the MASI thing?

    • You must be ferrari fans ! Ferrari have always be a big influence with the Fia. Forgotten the cover up with their engine , signed a non disclosure agreement!! For the good of all teams and especially drivers driving and bouncing needs to go and you hope the fia have done there own research for the new directives….

    • Yes as we have seen this year the alternating Race Directors have had different judgments at the every race on certain points!!

    • I don’t think he should’ve been fired, the issue for most of the season was the fact that Toto and Horner had a direct line to him, with the changes they made this season he could’ve been much better. FIA used him as a scapegoat to make merc happy because they were throwing such a tantrum

  4. IN MY MIND & OPINION I FEEL A TEST MUST BE DONE BY THE F.I.A.ON A CHASSIS THAT HAS THIS NEW EFFECT & A CHASSIS THAT DOESN’T AND RID THE SPORT OF THE PROBLEM @ THE EXPENCE OF THE F.I.A. SO AS NOT TO AFFECT ANY COSTCAP TO ANY TEAMS DISADVANTAGE & WHATEVER THE OUTCOME MUST BE ACCEPTED BY ALL TEAMS & AT A SUBSIDISED EXPENCE AFTER ALL WE WANT TO SEE GOOD COMPETITIVE MOTORSPORT & LESS INTERFERENCE FROM THE MEDIA & NO REMARKS ABOUT EACH OTHER, AS I MAINTANE THE F.I.A IS THE RULING BODY & THEY ARE TO BE RESPECTED.ad
