Ricciardo slams Verstappen fans

Last weekend, during qualifying for the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, many fans applauded the crash of Lewis Hamilton after his Mercedes went off and into the barriers. According to the Dutchman’s former team mate, this was somewhat of an unsportsmanlike attitude strongly condemned. Daniel Ricciardo called on fans to show more respectful behaviour at such events, slamming Verstappen’s fans.

While Lewis Hamilton was at full speed on a flying lap during the qualifying session last weekend, the British driver lost control of his car at Turn 7 and it went through the gravel trap before smashing into the wall. The crash was applauded by many fans – mainly fans of Max Verstappen of Red Bull, Hamilton’s great rival last season – who were delighted to see the 37-year-old driver go off resulting in a worse grid slot for the race.

According to Ricciardo, this was a rather dubious behaviour, especially as at the time of the applause, the state of health of the seven-time world champion was still unknown, who fortunately escaped unhurt from his accident.

This unfortunate episode in qualifying was one of many that Lewis Hamilton received throughout the Austrian Grand Prix weekend. Indeed, the vast majority of the fans who made the trip to the Red Bull Ring were part of the Oranje Army, Max Verstappen’s fan community.

While the on-track rivalry between the reigning world champion and the Englishman has calmed down considerably this year, this is not the case with the Dutch fans, who continue to show great hostility towards Hamilton. This is a state of mind that McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo does not agree with at all, and he made a point of reacting to the latest events.

“I’ve never been a fan of booing, so I don’t condone it,” said Ricciardo,

“But of course there are drivers you like, and those you don’t necessarily support. But I think in an accident you don’t want to see that kind of behaviour,” Daniel Ricciardo said to the Mirror, before adding: “I’m not going to control the stands and all the emotions of the spectators. In terms of the rivalry and all that, it’s obviously good for the sport and the fans supporting their driver,

It’s good to see. But I think there’s probably a time and a place and it’s not something I would like to see. And even obviously when we’re not involved, and I’m happy not to be involved in a situation like that. We are human beings, and I think people have to remember that sometimes.”

Daniel Ricciardo called on all fans to be a little more mature around the circuits:

“It’s easy when you’re in the crowd all day and you’ve obviously had a few beers, and if the guy next to you does that, then you think it’s okay to do it. But you get to an age where you become that mature and you realise that those things you did when you were 15, you shouldn’t be doing as a 30-year-old man.”

  1. Verstappen was gifted his World Championship and his fans know it. He didn’t deserve it and will not win another. It’s a pity he’s attracted the lowest example of Danish support but not a surprise.

    • They are Dutch not Danish, the Danish people are some of the nicest people you could ever meet.

      • Poor form to cheer before knowing the driver is safe and unharmed. I’ve lived in Indy my whole life, and this lack of decorum wouldn’t be tolerated at the 500 in any way. We’re a bunch of cut-off wearing Budweiser drinkers, and even we know: you cheer for your team/driver to win not for others to lose. Gross behavior.

    • Given the type of person Verstappen has shown himself to be, his “tribe” should not be a surprise.

  2. What do we expect from certain fans? They seem to represent the drivers in a nasty way. I wonder if that attitude is coming from the drivers. I was surprised to hear Max fans cheering when Hamilton crashed. Actually felt that they were a disgrace to any sport. No fans should react that way towards other drivers. Time that the fans of Max wised up and supporters who are not as disrespectful distance themselves from the culprits. Dutch people I thought were decent, yet these fans represent the Dutch. So overall makes me think they are all like this. Or is it Belgium fans dressed in orange to discredit Max because he switched allegiance from Belgium?

    • Your reaction is as sad as the small group of misbehaving fans. Stupid generalizations while you should know very well this a very small, not representative group. I don’t know what country you come from but I sincerely hope the majority is wiser than you.

  3. It was very quiet in Orange Land when the Ferrari passed the angry young Max three times. Were they all seeing red for a change?

  4. It is all very well for Ricciardo to condemn Max fans but I wish he had the same courage to condemn Ham fans when they behaved similarly in Silverstone this year. When wishing for maturity from fans, he might also try to advise Hamilton to display the same maturity. No one can so easily forget the apelike jumping of Hamilton and his rumbunctious celebration in Silverstone 2021 after his win in that race, not even bothering to ask after the condition of Max whom he deliberately hit, trying to eliminate him once for all so that he could have 10 championships and establish the superiority of his race over the others.
It is astounding that Ham could talk of racism when he is the biggest racist around. Disgusting.

  5. I did not hear mr Ricciardo be so outspoken when Hamilton abundantly celebrated his win in Silverstone with flag waving and all, while a driver was actually in a hospital because of him …

    • Glad that at least you remember it. When it comes to Hamilton, everyone, Ricciardo included, become deaf-mutes. His power is such, far more than what any WDC should have. It is all very well for Ricciardo to condemn Max fans but I wish he had the same courage to condemn Ham fans when they behaved similarly in Silverstone this year. When wishing for maturity from fans, he might also try to advise Hamilton to display the same maturity. No one can so easily forget his wild dance in Silverstone 2021 after his win, not even bothering to ask after the condition of Max whom he deliberately hit, trying to eliminate him once for all.

  6. Jesus, are we still debating this?

Do we mean these fans, who are obviously baying for blood and not stunned into silence then applauding Max?

    https://youtu.be/Jd3PAiGRhCY

And when we say, Lewis never bothered to ask how Max was before celebrating, are we forgetting the radio message(s?) to Lewis that he was OK

There’s a name for the process Vijay and Duckey are employing… its called gaslighting (although other may just all it bullshit)

  7. As far as I remember Hamilton asked his team is max ok and there reply was Max is out of the car and has said he is ok. The hospital visit was precautionary.

      • So a simple eadiomessage from the team is enough for you to know that a driver is ok? How did they know? Appearantly they have paranormal doctors that can diagnose through a tv screen. Than Redbull had the same doctors in Imola and told Max, Lewis was ok.

The bs is coming from you G.

The sad thing is that the LH side and the MV side have dug in so deep. The other guy is 100% bad and the own guy is 100% good. No reasoning possible anymore

  8. “The sad thing is that the LH side and the MV side have dug in so deep. The other guy is 100% bad and the own guy is 100% good. No reasoning possible anymore”

More nonsense and gaslighting…. Read back to ANY of my posts at the height of the post Abu Dhabi controversy, and you will see the exact opposite from me, I’m affraid.

And, your statement about “paranormal doctors”… what are you on about? The team see MV get out of the car, walk to the medical car (standard procedure), then will have received an announcement from Race Control on his condition, which was what was reported to LH

As for both sides digging in… I have a mirror for you 🤦🏻

  9. these so called Max fans are not race fans. Only winning races by Max counts for this…..
Unfortunately, many LH fans have reached this point as well (given the comments on this forum).
I enjoyed a good race in Austria with a deserved winner. Not my preferred winner, but I can live with the fact that he didn’t win.
And I have to accept that there are a lot of idiots around. It made me decide not to go to the Austrian GP anymore.

    • I agree Dre. Austria was a great race and Leclerc a righteous winner. Fine with me. Ferrari was stronger. I find it sad to hear you will no longer go to a race because of the hooligans. This way those asshole’s win. If the good ppl stay away, the group of bad ppl gets biggger. Not good.
