“Alonso would be 7 champion in Lewis’s car”

DTM boss Gerhard Berger believes Fernando Alonso could have won at least five Formula 1 world titles if the Spaniard had driven Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, bringing up his total tally of F1 championships to 7, matching Michael Schumacher.

Although Fernando Alonso has not fought for a world title in Formula 1 since 2012, Gerhard Berger believes that the two-time world champion is a “brilliant” driver and that with a Mercedes in his hands he could very well have won several more world titles in his career:

“I must say that with his talent Alonso could have five world titles for me. He is a brilliant driver. After McLaren he closed the doors a bit, because if he was in a Mercedes he would have five world titles,” said Berger, quoted by Motorsport Magazin.

When asked if he thought Fernando Alonso could also fight for another world title if he was sitting in a Ferrari or Red Bull, the Austrian replied without hesitation, “Yes, I’m 100% sure!”

An ardent admirer of Fernando Alonso, this is not the first time Berger has complimented the Alpine driver, as a few months ago the Austrian told Servus TV: “Sometimes there are special drivers: Ayrton Senna was one, Michael Schumacher was one, and Alonso was one.”

MORE F1: Was Nelson Piquet’s language really racist?

Formula One has seen a huge row develop today over historic footage uncovered where Nelson Piquet apparently used a racial slur against Lewis Hamilton. F1, the FIA, Mercedes and others have all come out against the Brazilian 3 times world champion for his use of the Portuguese word “neguinho” to describe Lewis Hamilton.

In previously uncovered footage Nelson Piquet has been revealed analysing the collision between Hamilton and Verstappen at the 2021 British GP. He was scathing of Hamilton’s driving suggesting it was….. READ MORE ON THIS STORY

  1. Wow, what an insight. Literally everybody would be 7-times WDC in Lewis’ car. And Russell proves race after race, that it wás the car and not Lewis.

  2. N. P. & likes of all the REIREES, are either SENILE /ENVIOUS OF A NON WHITE HOLD ALL THE RACING F1 RECORDS
IF U THINK PIQUET, WAS NOT BEING RACIST,???
THEN DONT POST, THIS RACIST REMARKS 🤮🤮

  3. And if he had Schumachers ferarri then he could have won 7 too.
Hamilton would be leading this year if he had a redbull car …..
These arguments are so weak and counterproductive…

Alonzo doesn’t have the car and doesn’t have the 7 titles,Hamilton and Schumacher do.
Actually Hamilton has 8. He’s the unofficial winner of the 2021 season.

    • There is no such thing as an “unofficial winner”. The record books say Verstappen won and that’s it. The real picture shows this year. As soon as the car isn’t a second faster than the rest anymore, Lewis is nowhere, just as he was in the first half of 2009. And that’s the point Berger tried to make with his comment about Alonso. Alonso wouldn’t be comprehensively beaten by his team mate, in fact he’d probably have extracted one or two more podiums out of it. He has a history of putting crap cars in positions they don’t belong.

  4. Top teams couldn’t cope with Alonso’s arrogance and petulence that is why they all offed him quite quickly.

  5. Even Horner is now saying how wrong Massi was. Before you start hiring a hitman that is his boss saying that. If you look at the data between George and lewis and as much as keep saying he is miles better, there isn’t a lot of difference.

  6. 7-2 to George in race finishing positions. Not bad as Lewis is supposed to the the goat
