Ocon attempts to explain why he is slow compared to Alonso

Despite a very consistent start to the Formula 1 season, Esteban Ocon seemed to be behind Fernando Alonso in Australia and is trying to explain why.

After three solid races, Esteban Ocon finished in the points in each race and is now well behind his teammate in the F1 driver standings. However, the points gap between the two drivers does not really reflect their performances. Fernando Alonso had a lot of bad luck, especially in Australia where his car broke down while he was on his way to an exceptional time in qualifying. Esteban Ocon tried to explain this difference in pace with his team mate.

“It didn’t really pay off for us”

“I think I have mixed emotions about this weekend. We could have done a bit more with the performance of the car overall for the team, so to finish seventh is good, and that’s three races out of three in the points.

“It all came down to qualifying, and probably a top five in qualifying would have been a top five in the race. I have mixed feelings about that, but it’s a very good lesson because we can take the development away from the bad decision we made this weekend,

“The car was worth a top five. We made a decision on Friday night to run our car in a different way. It was to try and steer the development more in one direction, and it didn’t really pay off for us. But on an average weekend, finishing seventh and scoring six points is pretty good,”
