Toto Wolff judges George Russell’s debut: Mercedes AMG F1 has been struggling on the track since the start of the Formula 1 season. However, Toto Wolff is quite satisfied with George Russell’s performance, although he feels that the 24-year-old driver and Lewis Hamilton deserve a better car. Lewis has drawn criticism from others when compared to his young team mate.
For the 2022 Formula One season, Mercedes changed its driver line-up from Valtteri Bottas to George Russell, replacing Lewis Hamilton’s former Finnish team mate. However, the German F1 team has been struggling since the start of the season, with the seven-time world champion finishing tenth at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on Sunday. Earlier in the week, the British driver even cited that it was affecting his mental health.
George Russell, on the other hand, has been a little more consistent as he is currently in fourth place, just three points behind Max Verstappen, in the overall standings after his first two races with his new car. As a result, Toto Wolff was very pleased with the 24-year-old driver’s performance, even if he feels that his team deserves a better car.
“George has proved that he has the ability to drive at the front”
“Russell? I think he’s doing a great job. But he’s not given a tool to fight at the front where he and Lewis deserve to be.
“George has proved he has the ability to drive at the front but at the moment we are not giving him the car he deserves, so I am very happy with his overall performance,” the Mercedes boss revealed.
Hamilton and Mercedes criticised
Unfortunately, it’s looking less likely that we will see a big turnaround anytime soon if the words of ex F1 driver and former champion Jacques Villeneuve are to be believed. Indeed the Canadian goes as far as to claim that Hamilton enjoyed his dominance over the last 8 years because of the Mercedes power unit that this year is clearly lacking, something Russell can handle compared to Hamilton.
“It is clear that Mercedes has fallen from its pedestal. For years they were superior, bad weekends could be camouflaged by their powerful engine, but that is no longer the case.
“ It will be interesting to see how the team reacts because Toto Wolff [team boss] and Lewis Hamilton are not used to it.” said the Canadian to the Dutch news.
“ You could say that competing for wins is no longer an option for Mercedes. George Russell can still handle the car to some extent. Maybe it’s because of his years at Williams where he also had to drive a tough car. But Lewis Hamilton does not come out of it at all. He always had a perfect car, he never had to push because they were so much faster. ”

Apparently, Jacques Villeneuve has completely forgotten the several years Hamilton spent battling tight battles against an extremely strong Nico Rosberg. How quickly people forget where Mercedes was before Hamilton signed up. Nobody made unfavourable comparisons when bully boy Schumacher won his championships, so you have to ask why now? George Russell is a nice guy too, so he can expect the same treatment if he’s successful?
