Mercedes sends a big message to Hamilton after Verstappen’s win

Mercedes sends a big message to Hamilton after Verstappen’s win in the form of its driver Nyck de Vries – Since his Formula 1 defeat by Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton has been silent. And the Mercedes Formula E driver has been rather understanding about the British drivers’ feelings.

Since the Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last December, Lewis Hamilton has been silent. He was on his way to victory and an eighth world F1 title when he saw Max Verstappen make up the deficit and finally win. This was due to a decision by race management that some feel was incorrect but in reality, as the FIA’s ‘umpire’ was a final decision to be followed without question.

While the Dutchman received a wave of tributes, Lewis Hamilton received a lot of support, particularly from Mercedes. After the management of the German team, it was the turn of Nyck de Vries, Formula E driver, to show understanding towards Lewis Hamilton.

“I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose an eighth title, but I respect and understand his feelings…”

“First of all, I want to stress that Max is a very deserving world champion,” says Nyck,

“Everyone, especially me, thinks he deserved it. He had a fantastic season, there is no doubt about his qualities or that he deserved to win the championship, we all agree on that. That’s something I definitely want to acknowledge.

“But on the other hand, Lewis (Hamilton) has also had a very good season. On Sunday in Abu Dhabi he did everything he needed to do to win the title. The race direction made decisions that were not in accordance with the rules and surprised him, which ultimately deprived him of the championship.

“This is of course a very bad thing and I don’t think it should be possible in the sport. But what can be done? I don’t know. I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose an eighth title, but I respect and understand his feelings.

“It would have been the same if the situation had been reversed. Anyway, Max is just a very good driver, a hero and he deserves the championship. That’s also a fact,” said Nyck de Vries.

    • If Mercedes team would have been smart enough to put new soft tyres Hamilton would be champion don’t know who take decisions to leave him whith use one compare to new for Verstapen

  1. Nick De Vries is wrong to say the decisions made surprised Lewis Hamilton.
From listening to the driver to team radio during the final safety car period it is perfectly clear that Lewis knows the team have made a mistake for not pitting for tyres. He questioned them about this immediately. He understood that the race isn’t over until the chequered flag and the old adage of being on the right tyre at the right time was going to be more important than trying to keep track position.
At the time the safety car was deployed nobody knew how long it would be out for so the safe bet was to put for tyres. I know that was a gamble but so was not pitting. This situation was made worse as Lewis had not pitted under the VSC several laps earlier.
I think Lewis was let down by the team as much or more so than Michael Masi.

  2. May be ! But Hamilton is the better driver the best and it was snatched by dubious methods by ok a good driver but not off thr same Ilk as Lewis ..Vestappen is a danger ….

    • Lulu is more dangerous and harmful to sport than verstappen he almost tried to kill him at his home race but his plan did not succeed he tried to bring destructive agenda into sport. Lulu think hes privileged bcouse of his bbc but he is a closeted woke loser in reality who has been destroyed by the real lion. Keep dreaming his woke luser fans of him winning a championship again

      • I’m not gonna ask what a BBC is, I assume its something to do with UK television? 😉

        ps like the name

        • I can’t understand how people make such statements like Max deserved to win, how? You win a championship on the track and not off it, as good as he was all season, the fact is Lewis was better and showed everyone the difference between himself and the others, including Max. He caught Max from way back delivering an unbelievable performance to draw level. Max is not deserving simply because the championship was handed to him, Lewis won the championship on the track as a professional athlete and Max won off the track, for reasons only the race director and the FIA can explain.

      • Max tried even harder to kill Lewis when he drove over the top of him tho. Strange take you have on the word loser as well. Odd choice to use to describe the sports most successful ever driver surely?

    • Verstappen has been voted best driver by the other drivers and also by the team bosses. Hamilton is a good driver, but also has the fastest car.

Your opinion is what it is, its an opinion

    • Max is een ander level, dat is in elke sport. Als jij Max gevaarlijk vind kun je beter wat anders gaan kijken. Hetzelfde in Moto GP. Marqués is een ander level als Rossi. Ook agressiever het is nou eenmaal zo. Sneller agressiever kortom de betere op dit moment.

  3. We all need to support Hamilton.he is still the best driver we have ever had, he only lost because of a bad judgment, by the race the director, he was 10 seconds ahead of verstappen , he had spent 3 laps ,overtaking the lapped drivers ,had ,
a free tyre change ,and given the race ,by not having to overtake, the lapped drivers, I hope that our champion doesn’t stop racing

    • ha ha ow hilarious don’t forget he cheated as wel on the first lap by cutting the corner and not giving a place back. but everybody is okay with that it seems. if he was really a racer he would stop moping and get back and show them. but he isnt hes after fame and fortune

  4. Andy from Southampton
The result of the Abu Dhabi grand prix is an absolute shame if this was to happen in a grand prix motorcycle race with over three quarters of the race completed it would have been red flagged and the result would have gone to the leader on the previous lap this decision that was made was diabolical shall not watch F1 again am totally disappointed with the people who are supposed to follow the rules

  5. I’m sick of watching Hamilton win, but the fia removed any element of sport from the final race. There were 2 options. A) allow all the lapped cars to unlap themselves, B) don’t.
The fia chose to unlap ONLY the cars between 1st and 2nd. This is no different than using a blue shell in Mario kart to catch your opponents.

The fact that the rules were removed in order to allow max verstappen the win basically means there is no competition in F1. Its a spectical not unlike wrestling. It has seriously impacted my desire to watch, I certainly wouldn’t want to invest money and race as the teams are expected to.

I think the best thing for Mercedes and Hamilton to do is bow out and hit the FIA where it hurts. It seems like such an ignorant and self important boys club that the fia really doesn’t realize how much they have compromised the integrity of the sport and think they can just manipulate the teams to confirm to this by waiting 4 months for a review. This should have been investigated immediately following the race, not for Mercedes but for race fans to assure them of the integrity of the sport.

  6. Hahihahi this sport is the reality of life 21 cis white guys can’t even beat one black guy shows how our black breed is so superior and why you try to supress us it’s time whities for your extinction all white pussyes will be only for real black men #onlyblacklifesmatter #coz i is black and black is superior

  7. Max deserves to win a world championship, but not this one. He did not win the final race of the season on merit. The race conclusion was manipulated by the steward’s to the benifit of Max, ant to the detriment of Lewis and others, which is totally unfair from any point of view. Steward’s are there to ensure fair competition within the rules first and foremost. What is the point of racing if you know the steward’s can at any time, change the rules as they see fit.
The championship from Max’s point of view will always, and rightly so, be tainted as illegitimate.

    • There is a different between fact and opinion that Nyck de Vries clearly struggles with. In his opinion, Max deserves to be world champion. Fact, the rules of the sport were not followed.

    • Reality – Everyone knows that Lewis won the World Championship Eight times. No arguments here. Max was awarded the win and his first title as a World Champion and whilst he accepted it and celebrated he knows it within himself that his victory was a hollow one. In short, Truth Prevails at all times and with everyone. There are no exceptions where truth is concerned.

  9. Interesting to see yet another racing driver who can see what masi did was a complete and Utter joke. Very well said

  10. This will be my last comment on this particularly boring (by now) subject (and this is from a self confessed Lewis fan – not a whinging hamofosi or any of the more derogatory comments routinely made by posters on this site), just a regular fan

1 – Max deserved to win the title after a very good season (with a few blips along the way), but was getting beaten at the very end, and I am roundly pleased that he did win it in the end, just not in the manner in which he did

2 – Lewis deserved to win the title after a very good season (with a few blips along the way), but had it ripped from his grasp by a) the racing gods, which any sensible fan would accept, but also b) the outside influence as a result of a decision made by the race director

3 – the “judge” has lucked into a topic that stirs up such hatred and division in the more extreme and unsavoury elements of F1 “fans”, which has enabled him to boost his ratings significantly. He will keep banging them out, stoking the fire, and milking it for all its worth
