Hamilton: “when you are a minority…”

England’s loss to Italy on penalties led to an outpouring of hatred and racist messages on social networks. F1 driver and current Formula 1 Champion Lewis Hamilton claims to be committed to fighting discrimination and certainly didn’t hold back on Instagram.

Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all missed their shots on goal in England’s Euro final loss to Italy (1-1, 3-2 on penalties). These three young faces are nevertheless the promise of a bright future for the Three Lions team. The defeat of the English side provoked numerous racist comments posted in the night following the match. Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton was particularly involved in the fight, replying on Monday.

Via Instagram, Hamilton strongly condemned the hateful messages posted after England lost the final:

“I had so many things on my mind watching the final moments of last night’s game. On the one hand, I was so proud of how far we’ve come…

“To be in the final with such a diverse team is an achievement we can all be proud of, but when the players stepped up to take the penalties I was worried.

“The pressure to perform is felt by all sportsmen and women, but when you are a minority and representing your country, the experience is more complex.

“A success would feel like a double victory, but a failure feels like a double failure when it is compounded by racist insults. I wanted this victory so much, as did all of you, but for me it was much more than winning the Euro, it was a much bigger picture.

“However, the disgusting behaviour of a small number of people shows how much work still needs to be done. I hope this opens up a discussion on acceptance.

“We need to work on a society that does not require black players to prove their worth or place in society solely by winning. At the end of the day, everyone in the England team should be very proud of their performance and how they represented us.”

  1. I can’t stand soccer (football). It’s a sport riddled with diving, fake injuries, drama queens and just about everything else I detest in sport. I was glad to see England lose. The virtual signaling, knee-taking multi-millionaires, pretending to be victims is beneath contempt. But lets be brutally honest – the reason that the three black players took the last penalty shots was done in the hope that England was going to win and the player scoring the winning penalty would be black. And whether the coach or the FA will admit it – it was done for political reasons. To bad for the players – but their virtue signaling ended up biting them in the ass.

As for Hamilton – he’s nothing but another multi-millionaire (victim) race hustler.

    • Perhaps I am naïve, but I really didn’t consider the possibility of the last three players being black as such an issue. The last two substitutions were brought on (as far as I am aware) because of their penalty taking abilities and that they would be feeling fresh(er) and strong(er) than the goalie who had been playing the whole match and extra time? I never considered that if we had won on penalties, it was because three black players took the ‘winning penalties’. Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this point. I would have preferred England to have won, but they did not. I was not glad they lost.

      • I’m not going to debate with you other than to say, one of the players, Saka, had prior to the Euro’s, never taken a penalty kick ay any level of senior football. Yes you read that right – any level…..

  2. Well done for nailing your flag to the mast and admitting that you are part of the problem, not the solution

  3. Lewis seems to be pro Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter is a Marxists driven organization. Ask people in North Korea, Venezuela and Cuba, how that is working out for them.
