Leclerc confesses a big problem driving the Ferrari

Today saw the launch of the new Ferrari Formula 1 challenger, the SF1000 – the team hope that their new driver pairing of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr will bring success in a new car with a redesigned engine, not subjected to the same fuel restrictions that hobbled the 2020 F1 car.

But Leclerc confessed a big problem, namely in his driving style, but one he hopes to correct with the new Formula 1 Championship season soon to start in Bahrain.

The 2021 season could mean the definitive leap in quality as the youngster means to address the issue saying:

“I don’t think I’ve ever worked for Ferrari as much as I have this year,” admitted the Monegasque, as reported by Corriere dello Sport.

“We’ve also done some testing with the old car, so I feel very ready.”

The Monegasque is aware that he has to continue on his path of growth and confesses his biggest problem driving the Ferrari car.

“I think that on tyre management I have to continue to grow. Last year I made great progress and I hope to continue to improve in 2021”.

It took months to understand what needs to be corrected:

“Basically in this offseason, I watched the races to understand what we could have done better as a team, but also as a driver and try to improve. And definitely on tyre management, there is work to be done.”

Leclerc’s mind is definitely on Bahrain. A very complicated first race. The pandemic, in fact, will not allow the drivers to try out much (only three days of winter testing) and so there will be many unknowns on the track.

The team hope that their new car performs well, but more importantly that their brand new engine will remove fully the shackles of their ‘punishment’ fuel restriction of 2020, where it is believed that the secret deal between Ferrari and the FIA resulted in the team having to run with less fuel in their engine alleged to be operating outside of the rules. The feeling at Maranello are certainly positive. Work continues to allow the two drivers to have at their disposal a much more competitive car than the one from last season. The goal remains to be able to fight for at least the podium in every race and then take advantage of every smallest opportunity for victory.

9 Alternative angles of Ferrari SF1000

Leclerc and Sainz are ready to give their all this season, even if their heads are also turned towards 2022, Formula 1’s year of big change. A World Championship many hope is destined to mark the end of Mercedes’ dominance and a far more balanced fight for the title.

  1. “Today saw the launch of the new Ferrari Formula 1 challenger, the SF1000”

The 2021 car is the SF21 – the 2020 car was the SF1000.

    Claiming the 2021 is the SF1000 isn’t a typo – it’s a lack of knowledge….
