Over the last season one thing has stood out for this Judge, and that is Charles Leclerc’s qualifying performances during this 2020 Formula 1 season – yesterday’s performance at the Sakir Grand Prix justifies this praise.
OK, perhaps the comparison to Alonso isn’t strictly accurate. The Spaniard has always had good pace on a Saturday during his prime years in the noughties, and perhaps by the Ferrari era on most definitely by the McLaren era, one could argue it was a Sunday that the best kind of Alonso would appear, rather than the single-lap pace required for qualifying.
But regardless, the astonishing aspect of Alonso was always to drag a car further forward than it ought to be. And certainly, this season, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is currently performing on a similar level during qualifying in a woefully poor Ferrari.

What matters is Sunday, and without Ferrari’s “special” engine, Leclerc makes the same mistakes over and over. He’s still driving in a race like a rookie. He’d better learn from his mistakes quick because his teammate next season won’t roll over and play dead like Vettel has.
