The president of the Automobile Club d’Italia, Angelo Sticchi Damiani, has asked the authorities for additional resources to be able to restore the old track and its famous banking as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the Monza Autodrome that will take place in 2022.

At present, Monza is the oldest circuit in the world to host a Formula 1 World Championship race, although cars have not used the banking, also known as the high-speed ring, for many years for obvious safety reasons.

 

But the president of the Automobile Club d’Italia would like the authorities to put their hands in their pockets to allow a refurbishment of the Italian track, as well as the banking, which has been abandoned for many years now.

“Extraordinary resources are needed, and we are asking the government above all for them, because this is a national event, not a local one. ” said Damiani to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“Monza deserves it, it is the oldest circuit in the world where a Formula 1 Grand Prix is still held. It was born in 1922 and is still being raced there.

“The centenary is an opportunity not only to restyle the circuit, but also to modernise it and make it fit for the next twenty years.

“We have to recover the high-speed oval track, which is not only is a remarkable piece of industrial archaeology, but also allows the organisation of races to be held in the future.

If the restoration works are ever voted in, the chances of seeing the Modern Formula 1 cars driving on the Monza speed ring are however relatively low due to the extraordinary danger involved at high speeds.
