Max Verstappen’s father Jos Verstappen is starting to put pressure on the Red Bull Racing team, now that Honda has announced its withdrawal from F1 at the end of the 2021 season.
Whereas Red Bull Racing had bet heavily on its partnership with engine manufacturer Honda and was clearly aiming for the world championship title by the end of 2021, the announcement of the withdrawal of the Japanese manufacturer at the end of next year leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of Jos Verstappen.
The father of the Red Bull driver is now asking the Milton Keynes team for a competitive car for his son and regrets that 2020 was another year in which the Dutchman was not able to fight for the title.
“I have to say that I was very disappointed about that, especially at the beginning of the year. “Jos Verstappen told De Telegraaf.
“Then you find out what the real situation is like and there is nothing else to do but accept. But that’s not what you want, you want to take part in the world championship.
“Red Bull needs to better organise its team, find out where the problems are and work on them.
“We are waiting to see what happens. It’s time for Red Bull to have a competitive car that you can become champion with.
“If Max has a competitive car next year, they won’t have to worry about anything. This is our goal: to become world champion. ”
In recent days, rumours had been circulating that Max Verstappen’s team might be leaving due to an engine-related clause in his contract. But the team management quickly denied this rumour.
Verstappen himself said this week that it was a “pity” that Honda would leave F1 at the end of the 2021 season, but that he would remain fully committed to his team for next season.
Max Verstappen’s contract has been extended until 2023 by the Red Bull Racing team, but as is well known, a contract can be torn up in a fraction of a second in Formula One and means nothing, just a big pay off.

He doesn’t have any shares in Red Bull and he should be grateful that RB took his son in the first place without much of a record of championships or trophies.
Verstappen Jr is right to be disappointed that Honda will leave the sport but Alonso was even more disappointed by Ferrari and by Honda plus McLaren (not to mention Stirling Moss, Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello, John Watson or even Felipe Massa).
Jos hasn’t put a cent into Red Bull (even if he bankrolled his son to get started from his own overpaid capital) and any feeling of entitlement he expresses only shows his insufferable arrogance.
Jos should keep his mouth shut and look for a way to get Max into a championship winning team,,,,,,,but who would tolerate his attitude and trouble making character? Certainly not Mercedes.

From where I stand, EVERYTHING that he does and says, the initiatives and campaigns that he both promotes and supports, are fully backed by Mercedes and are FAR from having to be “tolerated”

I agree – it certainly won’t be Mercedes because Hamilton would never allow it to happen. It’s such a shame because it would be good to see him prove himself against a much quicker driver than the wingman. So come on Lewis, please let Max come and play with you!!

Regardless of the engine that Red Bull have had since 2014 – Newey hasn’t produced a chassis that has either been better or matched M-B and at times Ferrari. I suspect that unless Red Bull can give Verstappen a car that realistically can win the WC next year, he’s gone to M-B to replace Hamilton.
