Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff has confirmed that he would like to sign a three-year contract extension with his driver Lewis Hamilton.

A few days ago, six-time Formula 1 championship winner Lewis Hamilton indicated that he would like to remain in the Formula 1 championship for at least another three years, until the end of the 2023 season.

Negotiations with his employer Mercedes are still ongoing for an extension of his contract – which expires at the end of this year – and not surprisingly, the Briton is expected to extend his contract with his current team next year.

Asked specifically about Lewis Hamilton’s future with the Mercedes team and his desire to stay in F1 for at least another three seasons, Toto Wolff confirmed that he would indeed like to sign a three-year contract with Hamilton.

“Yes [for a three-year contract]. We’re having good discussions, I’m quite positive that we’ll be able to sign a contract soon. ” said Wolff on France’s Canal+.

As for the team’s second driver, even if he doesn’t confirm it, Wolff suggests that Valtteri Bottas will also be extended next year, not least because the atmosphere within the Mercedes team has never been better than it has been since 2017 – when Bottas joined the team to replace Nico Rosberg.

“Valtteri is doing a good job, he won the first race [of the 2020 season]. The difference from the situation we had with Nico [Rosberg] and Lewis is that we have a good atmosphere,” explained the Austrian.

“It’s really positive, it’s productive for the engineers. We don’t have the mistrust that existed between the other two. ” compares Wolff.

If three years is indeed the target contract length, and assuming that Hamilton will very likely be the Champion again this season, then it’ is fairly clear that another trio of World Drivers Championships is the aim and probable outcome.

Wolff is no fool. And as such it is almost certain to have sold the idea to the parent company of Daimler and Lewis Hamilton; that if the pairing can help their driver achieve 10 Championships, this is a record unlikely to ever be broken and the Mercedes brand will forever be cemented to it.
