FIA made an official request to Pirelli to simplify the names of tyres.

Pirelli has introduced Hypersoft in the ongoing Monaco Grand Prix and it instantly was favoured by all the teams. But we may not see this or the Ultras or Supersofts from next year.

Yes you read it correct. According to Autosport, there was a request from FOM and FIA to Pirelli to simplify the names of tyres to make it easier for fans to remember.

So from next year we may have only three names; hard, medium and soft, depending upon the compounds used in a particular race. For example if in a race Pirelli is bringing Hyper, Ultra and Super then Hyper will be termed as Soft while Ultra as medium and Super as hard.

This idea has been around for sometime, but it has now become an official request to Pirelli.

“We had a request from FOM and FIA to just call them hard, medium and soft,” said Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola.

“With three colours, the same colours and same names for all the races, but obviously different compounds, because you cannot use the same compounds in Silverstone or Monaco.

“On a second level we will have compound A, B, C, D, E, F or whatever, and we will tell you that for this race, the hard is B, the medium is D, and whatever.

“So for spectators it’s probably more understandable, but you also have the possibility to go deeper in detail for technical information that we will continue to provide.

“It’s an on ongoing discussion, but we said we are available to evaluate this change,” he added further.

Another area of consideration relates to sidewall colour of the tyre compounds.

Currently Supersoft is assigned Red but from next season the colour will depend upon whether it has been assigned Soft, medium or hard.

Commenting on the request for the change in the name and colour of tyres Mario Isola said, “I made a check with production and logistics, obviously we need to understand all the implications.

“We produce a specific batch for each race, to be sure that they all come from the same batch, so honestly to put a purple label or a yellow label or any other colour is not a big issue.”

He expects Pirelli to have “five or six” tyre compounds to use across the 2019 season.

While it still a request, it remains to be seen how fans would react to this change.
