Mercedes testing new bizarre rear lights

During testing today at Barcelona, Mercedes are trying out new lights that appear to work independently of the rear rain light, which suggests that they don’t serve the same function.

The lights are incorporated into the rear wing endplates and look very similar to the thin brake lights seen on FIA WEC LMP1 class of endurance prototype over the last few years.

It’s been suggested that the new lighting could be a safety measure to increase the visibility when another car is following.

  1. One big bright light surely is easier or the brain to interpret than three. The thin lights are way less visible covering a measly surface area.
