Late last month the FIA agreed to allow teams to mount their rear view mirrors on the halo, potentially increasing their relevance as a performance enhancing aerodynamic device, as long as they comply with all relevant regulations.
Further, the FIA sanctioned that although they could be mounted on the fairing of the halo, the teams were not allowed to dual mount the mirrors on the chassis and the halo. FIA single-seater technical boss Nikolas Tombazis stated that:
“We will not accept a dual mirror mounting (Halo + traditional survival cell), as this could cause delays in the event a rescue team had to remove the Halo following an accident.”
“We expect that you will be able to satisfy us that the installation is sufficiently rigid to ensure that the mirror does not vibrate too much, which would limit driver visibility.”
Ferrari already see the rear view mirror as an aerodynamically significant part of their car by sculpting air ‘turning vanes’ inside the pods holding the mirror. It’s no surprise that Ferrari are the first to take advantage of the new ruling.

Not very pleasing on the eye I have to say. It looks like the cars are starting to morph into the hideous versions that graced the tarmac during the 2008 season which had far too many flicks and winglets.
