It is fair to say that most F1 fans are not looking forward to the forced introduction of the halo safety device for this year.
Tested as a bolted on the 2015 and 2016 cars, the resulting aesthetics remain, questionable. There is a glimmer of hope for 2018 however. With such a significant appendage placed high on the chassis, engineers will have to work hard to incorporate the halo into the design of their 2018 cars. The added weight and aero interference will mean that the devices will have to become more integrated rather than the ‘slapped on’ approach seen before.
Industrial designer Olcay Tuncay Karabulut has put together a potential car design for Lewis Hamilton’s W09 2018 car. Perhaps all is not lost?
