Vettel rejects €120 million at Ferrari in favour of 1 year deal

Contract talks between Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel for 2018 may be complicated by the German driver’s insistence on a simple-one-year extension.

Finland’s Ilta Sanomat newspaper now cites sources saying Ferrari and Vettel may in fact not be in agreement over the duration of a new deal, with the German pushing for a mere one-year contract in order to leave his options open for 2019.

Future options for Vettel could include a deal with Mercedes for 2019, with pundits believing that Lewis Hamilton could retire at the end of next season when his Silver Arrows contract ends.

Stewart: Halo criticism akin to 1960s F1 safety backlash

Sir Jackie Stewart says the current outrage surrounding the planned introduction of the Halo to Formula 1 reminds him of the backlash against his own F1 safety push half a century ago.

The triple world champion led a safety campaign in grand prix racing in the 1960s that was not popular with many fans and observers at the time.

And Stewart feels that people these days would not be so swift to condemn the Halo if they considered the toll of death in motorsport.

Lowe: “very disappointed” with its performances in the first half of 2017

Heading into the 2017 season, Williams headed into the championship aiming to reclaim fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship after losing the position to Force India in a closely contested fight in 2016. This season however, the story remains the same, and the Grove-based team lie in fifth place in the standings while Force India is once again ahead.

Hamilton: Ferrari not as wasteful as Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton has stated that Mercedes have given up more points than Ferrari this season – a trait that needs to stop after the summer break.

Hamilton has been on the end of some poor results so far this campaign which have balanced out dominant performances at the likes of Canada and Silverstone.

And while both Ferrari cars suffered sudden tyre problems at the latter venue to throw away some valuable points, those incidents have been few and far between compared to their title rivals.

“We’ve given up a lot of points to this point today,” Hamilton said in Hungary. “I think Ferrari have given up a lot less as a team. But we just hope that we don’t give up any more points moving forwards.”

    • Ricciardo is more likely to sign with ferrari for 2019 after kimi goes. Vettel wont want to be teammates with ricciardo after 2014.

      • I don’t know who is more likely to sign, but I wonder which driver in his right mind expects Ferrari to not have a Number 1 and Number 2 policy in place as soon as a title fight is in sight.

Utter BS. No one was against new technology that stopped fires in F1 cars and stopped drivers getting incinerated or against getting rid of ARMCO where drivers could get decapitated. The issue then was cost – not safety. The HALO technology has been around for years, why now? Especially when there hasn’t been a race accident in F1, certainly as long as I can remember, where it would have saved a driver.

      • Then the answer is a full canopy. Then enclose the wheels to potentially stop a car getting launched, then reduce the speed. Or remove the driver all together and have him / her drive it remotely. But better yet shut down F1 entirely then no one will ever get hurt.
