There were some who thought the retirement of Nico Rosberg might calm Lewis Hamilton down somewhat, yet before a wheel is turned in anger the bi-polar like nature of Lewis Hamilton’s pronouncements is clearly set to continue – with or without his nemesis.
Less than two weeks ago, Hamilton caused a media stir when he revealed he’s asked Mercedes AMG F1 not to share data amongst the drivers this year.
“I go out, do my laps, do all my homework, [and] the other guy can see everything,” said Hamilton. “I have asked my team. I don’t want to see my team mate’s”.
Clearly this was not a unilateral offer of generosity by Hamilton to his new team mate Valterri Bottas because Lewis continued his lament the advantage being given to his team mate in greater detail.
“But because of this data [sharing] they can just copy you. ‘Oh he’s braking five metres later there, I’ll go out and I’ll try braking five metres later’.
“So that’s what I really dislike, because it enables them to get closer.
“That’s what I loved about go-karting; you weren’t able to do that and that was where just your raw talent is able to shine.”
Ironically there has been an impression spread abroad by those who have worked with Lewis at both Mercedes and McLaren that it is he who benefits more from the sharing of data amongst team mates. Rosberg was often categorised as the ‘cerebral’ one of the Mercedes pairing – with Lewis more akin to one who drives by the seat of their pants.
This suggestion by Hamilton that Mercedes should no longer share data in the garage was dismissed quickly by Toto Wolff. And in the modern world of F1 this course of action would be unthinkable.
Following the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix antics of Hamilton, Toto Wolff felt is necessary to publically criticise the Brit’s attitude and behaviour. “Undermining a structure in public means you are putting yourself before the team,” he said. “It is very simple, anarchy does not work in any team and in any company.
It may be Lewis has again had his ear tweaked by Wolff, following his suggestion that Mercedes team mates should no longer share data, because speaking to F1.com Lewis now has this to say about Bottas.
“I feel we already have a better working relationship than I ever had with any teammate I had before.
“He wants to do the best thing that he can in his first year with the team – and with me being here for quite a while now, I want to deliver and make sure that I give as much information so that he will learn”.
This will be surely the first of many more flip flops from Hamilton this season, who appears to swing between a mind-set of persecution when he feels the world is against him – and one of pure joy when all things are going his way.
This sounds a bit rich coming from someone who benefitted immensely from Alonso’s set up data when he was at McLaren. I think that this is just part of the ‘Teammate Mind Games’ that he likes to play.

He is a racing driver for heavens sake and they all express competitiveness and take any and every advantage they can get over their rivals. To imply he has a bipolar personality is going too far. Hamilton has always had a bipolar aspect to him more so than other drivers on the grid. It is for this transparency that I actually admire him.
I think the word bipolar referred simply to the fact the he has completely changed his tune on this as opposed to any more serious connotations. He did state, in the first instance, that he wasn’t happy with the sharing of data among teammates and felt that others could gain an advantage from seeing his data. He has now said that he is happy to share as much data as possible in order the Valtteri gets up to speed and out the blocks as quickly as possible. It is a complete U-turn that will most likely have been fuelled by the media boom about it and the teams stance on the subject. It isn’t necessarily biased against Lewis as he is known to say things that may be seen as controversial, before back peddling on them to limit the impact. Whether this is down to his impulsive nature, or to get column inches, only Lewis really knows.
The author should start by declaring that he does not like Lewis, which is his right, instead writting what is supposed to be an objective article and it’s far from that and bereft of any credible supporting evidence.

As Lewis stated in his comments (before they were laid out here in a lame/biased fashion), it would be better for the sport and the drivers if setup configuration could be shared, but not drivers driving style. He’s built his career on late braking, someone learning that they can copy his line/late breaking to benefit themselves isn’t necessary. These are the best drivers in the world, make them learn to drive the fastest by driving, not copying someone else’s driving.
And as Lewis stated, he thought it would be best for the sport and wasn’t asking his team, he was making statement in general regarding F1 as a whole. That it would be better for everyone.

Why would Lewis make such a statement if he benefits more from it. Let’s start with Maclaren, Lewis left in 2012, what happened to Maclaren in 2013. What happened to the race winning car that won the 2012 Brazilian Gp. When Alonso refused to share data after Monaco, it didn’t slow Lewis down if anything it made him faster. In the end it was Alonso who asked to share Lewis data for the Belgium gp. Mercedes started winning races in 2013 when Lewis joined. Infact they won three races that year. According to Nicky Lauder, Lewis brought 3/10th to the team.

LH can be helpful as he has always been Butler clearly he has been adopting his tactics where possible to keep his breaking advantage up his sleeve especially during qualifying.
All it means is LH has to do his own breaking adjustments after the race has started.
