Spain Tyre Choices
ZOMG we finally learned something new, that tyres go with teams, not drivers. Too bad, because it would’ve been fun to complain had it been the other way round. And at least we would’ve had SOMETHING to do other than discuss the brutal oppression being laid down by Mercedes. Oh wait, right, there is that whole tyre pressure saga as well, with pressure dropping during the races. 2 points to the cleverest solution as to how the 2 unnamed teams that might totally not be Red Bull and Toro Rosso were pulling it off… and if you don’t know why that’s weird, pay attention in the comments….

I thought the whole point of the tire choices was so that each driver could have a preference. If that is true, why doesn’t the tire follow the driver and not the team?
an interesting take on the limits per car rather than driver ….Let’s imagine Seb was magically in the championship battle heading into the last race, only to need to take a penalty due to exceeding his cars allocation of part x, could Ferrari decide to move Seb and his number 5 from the letter A Ferrari to Kimi’s poor letter B Ferrari – which of course would not have exceeded a part limit and so therefore no penalty for Seb – who would then magically romp home to win his first title for Ferrari?
Or more drastically, if a Red Bull driver gets to within the last race in the title battle but has exceeded their allocation and face a grid penalty, a sideways move to a sister Torro Rosso to avoid penalties?
Of course for Mercedes this approach may actually make sense, they could just leave the engineers on the side of the garage they are accustomed to and and swap the cars and drivers instead, might be less work!!!!
“Tyres selected sets per driver” it was never a driver selection, it was always a team selection, that is one of The consequences of blindly following most of the F1 press.
Some weird selections there, especially the one for Grosjean. If the car is good on hard, pick 2 hard and 5-6 medium. If it is good on softer tyres, pick 1 hard, 3-4 meds and the rest soft. But right now it’s all over the place.
