The #F1 Bar Exam: 13 June 2013

Welcome to this week’s TJ13 Bar Exam. Not too many entrants last week, hopefully we’ll see more people give it a shot this week.

Last week’s question(s): Can you name the two cars in the picture? Also, the two cars look very similar on the outside but what was the big difference on the inside? Also, the manufacturer of the cars can claim something that only Ferrari can also claim, what is it?

The answers I was looking for was: The two models in the pictures are the Matra MS80 and MS84. Although officially a Matra, the MS80 was run by the non-works Matra International team of Ken Tyrrell. The car was one of the first F1 racing cars to be designed with ‘wings’ for downforce to increase high-speed tyre grip.

The MS84 is a 4WD car – Save for the driveshaft to the front wheels, at the back the engine was mounted back-to-front with the gearbox directly behind the driver, but tellingly the Ferguson transmission and other necessary additions left the car 10% heavier than the two-wheel drive sister cars.

Apart from Ferrari cars, the Matra MS80 is the only non-British built car to win the Formula One World Constructors’ Championship (the French constructor Renault and the Austrian constructor Red Bull built their winning cars in the UK).

Well done to Mike and Cassius42 for getting all the answers right. Well done also to Anijs and Douglas for getting half of the answers. Also, thanks to Douglas for providing this clip, hope you enjoy the sound of the Matra V12!

This week’s question(s): Can you name the car in the picture below and in which year it was raced and by whom? Can you state the significance of the chassis and how it played a part in the future of the team? Also, the engine posed a major challenge to the engineers, was was it?

  1. Don’t forget to watch the clip on full screen – the quality may suffer, but the ride is superb!

    • Agreed – It seems to me the film was shot differently to today’s digital stuff… maybe a different focal-length lens… On the early shots of the car I can see no evidence of a camera so it was perhaps added later (or the other way round…) – but it does seem to be somehow more exciting…
